K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Love Oh Love

Love Oh Love (from Time For Us – 2019)

This song directly references GFriend’s debut era, almost to the point where it feels like a re-creation of songs like Me Gustas Tu and Glass Bead. I’m not complaining, since this “powerful innocence” sound is something I dearly love and miss. However, there’s only so far a direct copy can go. I don’t remember this standing out for me much in 2019, but now that K-pop is more removed from this approach it sounds especially refreshing. All that’s missing is a stronger set of melodies. With that said, Love Oh Love‘s effusive chorus is still quite fun.

  1. From what I understand, Love Oh Love was actually written at the same time as Me Gustas Tu and was a contender for being Gfriend‘s first comeback title track. While the superior song is obvious and definitely a major part of Gfriend‘s rise, Love Oh Love still feels like title track material (that dance breakdown was clearly made for the stage). I think Love Oh Love was actually also recorded at that time, which is why Yuju still has such prominence in the vocals. It was during the Sunrise era that she grew sicker and started taking a backseat to Eunha.

Others like this include Fever vs GRWM and Fallin’ Light vs Sunrise. Fever was always a weak part of Gfriend’s discography, having little relevance to their signature sound and following an already dying trend that was never particularly interesting, so GRWM would have been the better choice. Sunrise follows in Time for the Moon Night‘s footsteps and is certainly better than Falling’ Light.

  2. Yeah, this is a good old-fashioned GFRIEND song. Perfectly serviceable, and even in the larger context of their work, a refreshing return to form.
