Song Review: tripleS ∞! – Untitled

tripleS ∞! - UntitledI’m losing track of how many tripleS sub-units we have now, but I guess the sprawling nature of the project is kind of the point. Less than a month after the debut of Visionary Vision, we have a Japanese single by the newly-unveiled “∞!”. This unit takes a moodier approach, utilizing now-ubiquitous musical elements from the early 2000’s.

Requisite NewJeans comparison aside (I know, you’re sick of every song being compared to them), Untitled employs skittering drum and bass over moody synths and R&B flourishes. It’s sprightlier than these songs often are, and more rooted in melody. I’ve long since lost interest in this style of instrumental, but Untitled‘s soft chorus engages me on a different level.

There’s a hypnotic quality to this track that works in its favor. The melodic range is relatively flat, though the verses are more adventurous than the chorus. However, there’s something about the texture at Untitled‘s core that hits the sweet spot and gives it unique appeal. The song also feels fleshed out, delivering a brief bridge and satisfying contrast. It won’t go down in history as a huge release. I may not even recall it in a month’s time. But as a far as this style of track goes, Untitled finds its own lane.

  1. I understand people being tired of comparisons to New Jeans, but imagine how tired we are.. of every other song being a less successful attempt at recreating New Jeans’ sound.

That is also where my agreement with the post ends today, because this is by far my least favourite take on the genre yet. I had a hard time sitting through it at all. This feels to me like someone pressing a single note on a keyboard repeatedly for 3 minutes. That does not mean I think the song is objectively bad, by the way – just that I really, really don’t like it. I had a similar experience with an iconic rock song recently recommended to me and had to explain much the same to my disappointed friend. Just like that song, I will leave this song to the people who can appreciate it more than me!

    • Oh please tell! What was the rock song?

Confession here: since the election, I changed all my radio presets to hard rock, old rock, modern rock, anything loud. No news.

      • I’ve been on a big Gorillaz kick since the election; also deleted Xitter and signed on to BlueSky. I want fun and joy, at least until the chaos begins come January and I gotta start planning my exodus out of this circus.

      • It was Can You Feel My Heart (it is apparently very popular but I was raised under a rock). I don’t think it’s a bad song per se and I see the appeal I guess but I really do not enjoy it at all. You won’t be surprised to learn that my taste leans more towards poppy and punky rock. This is too slow and grating for me.

        • oh good heavens that one is not for me either.

Shouty McShouterson, and precisely oen hook, if you can call one measure of three notes on repeat a hook. All heat and no light, like a sterno can in an enclosed space.

          • I had a good laugh at ‘Shouty Mcshouterson’ because that is a more straightforward paraphrase of what I told my friend (I think I said something like ‘I don’t mind screaming in songs, but this song is JUST screaming.’)

Lack of melody and hooks is always what I complain about when my friend recommends me stuff and it’s fascinating to me. I guess hooks just aren’t important for some.

      • (Sidenote: I’m not from the US but I feel no better about the election, or the political situation closer to home, or anything going on in the world really. I’m trying to enforce no news for myself too in the last few weeks, for my own sanity.)

  2. Hey! It’s only 9 sub-units, one OT10 album, one OT24 album, one OST sub-unit, one solo OST and one crossover sub-unit so far! Which also means they qualify for a “Top Ten Best Songs” post 😉😉

I’m probably very biased here because tripleS are my faves. I’m not too into this style, but I like Untitled. The way they sing the chorus and that “lalalalala” almost feels like they’re casting a spell on me lol. Despite this being a popular sound, it doesn’t sound like a song anyone else could’ve released? It has that tripleS touch to it.

And NewJeans… Someone made an interesting comparison about NJ and tS being like yin and yang. NJ is what everyone wants their teenage years to be like, while tripleS are the harsh reality. Yk, even though I disliked tS’ depiction of youth at first, I guess I’ve come to the conclusion that this is how our generation will be remembered and maybe it’s time to embrace it xD

    • Ha, that’s an interesting take. It makes sense though, Jaden Jeong even confirmed once that he appreciates the realistic settings for their MVs and concepts. That’s what makes them so relatable and why I like them a lot.

  3. I think its okayish, it does a couple different nice flares here and there. The close 2nds super tight diminished chord hamony on the chorus are also nice.

But I can hear how the persistent drum tap on the 2nd and 4th on repeat the whole song could become like a dentist drill with the wrong earbuds or speakers.

  4. this sounds more like a PinkPantheress wannabe than NewJeans. Decent production but the vocals are incredibly weak so it’s meh to me.

  5. I like it, it’s on brand and on the same level as all their other title tracks. They found their niche and stick to it, that’s cool. I love it how they always come up with different ways of la-la-la. It’s a B for me.

  6. It reminds me a bit of Seoul Sonyeo Sound on their LOVElution EP which I really loved, so I obviously like this one as well.

And you’re right with the hypnotic quality of it, your review perfectly puts into words what I was thinking. Thank you!
