Song Review: Jay B – Crash

JAY B - CrashIt always amazes me how quickly artists can jump back into work after their military enlistment ends. Jay B returned less than a month ago, yet today he’s released his first full album. He may have been working on this for years, but it’s still impressive he was able to get it off the ground with just a few weeks’ time. Crash is the album’s title track and draws upon similar funk inspirations as 2022’s excellent Go Up.

Jay B excels in this musical arena, delivering a rhythmic performance that takes advantage of his full vocal range. Rhythm guitar joins forces with a groove that moves from subtle snaps to full-bodied bass. Some moments are more engaging than others, but the beat shows great focus that keeps the energy going. Bright synth tones add texture during the pre-chorus. I would have loved to hear more of this element throughout.

Crash misses the undeniable melodic hooks of Go Up, though there are a few nice flourishes here and there. The chorus is a bit of a letdown, falling into a predictable structure that never bursts with the intensity a great funk refrain should. All in all, this is a solid return. However, I doubt I’ll still be playing it this time next year.

  1. This is a downgrade for Jay B, seriously, someone who wrote songs like Ride, Deeper and Sunrise, even though they were all extremely short, no one can get enough of them, they are still so mesmerizing, this is a 6.5 only because I like him, he can do better.

  2. I was also impressed at how fast he got back to work. I’m guessing most of the music had already been made or there was already an outline to work with after he completed his military service.

Anyhow, I think this is a really good return. I’m always happy to see the GOT7 guys back, they all have released really great albums. I liked Jackson Wang and Yugyeom. I will probably like this new album by Jay B to given that he is like Jay Park’s son lol. Crash is also a very solid choice as a single, sounds mature but still fun and spicy.

    This is a 9!
