Song Review: fromis_9 – From

fromis_9 - FromI don’t usually write a song review unless there’s an accompanying music video, but a disbandment (?) single warrants at least a brief mention. I put a big question mark in that last sentence because it’s unclear whether fromis_9 will remain together after leaving Pledis Entertainment, though history doesn’t set a rosy precedent.

This departure occurs just after the group’s recent single Supersonic found growing chart success. It’s been clear for awhile that fromis_9 have what it takes to be one of the industry’s leading girl groups, but that never seemed to be the plan when it came to promotion. So, we have digital single From to cap a discography full of highlights.

Immediately upon pressing “play,” I was pleased to hear that From is not some sappy ballad. Instead, the song has a surging synthpop sound — atmospheric and sentimental but powered by an upbeat energy. There’s a warmth to both the vocals and production that suits the song well and eases the pain of this big transition. It’s nice to hear such a straightforward performance, driven purely by vocal melody with enough range to keep things interesting.

  1. Pretty, but seems really subdued. But I liked it and the girls’ vocals are good.

    8.25 (8, 8, 9, 8) for me and an obligatory fuck Pledis ☆*:.。. o(≧▽≦)o .。.:*☆

  2. with certain groups I’m already so enamored with them that lack of promotion doesn’t actually affect whether or not I catch their releases. Fromis_9 is the first time that as I was becoming a more dedicated fan, their lack of promotion caused me to lose track of them. They have a fantastic discography so it’s a shame to say goodbye to them. What is it with pledis? I can’t wrap my head around it

  3. I loved fromis_9’s songs in the past but 1 or 2 recent releases before this digital single didn’t really click with me. Nevertheless, I still looked forward to their songs because of their beautiful vocals. Loving the digital single so much and this had me wishing they continue singing under a different agency or something. I felt they had lot of potential and talent.. What a pity!!

  4. I watched the first episode of RU Next recently, and when they showed clips of Hybe’s roster it was BTS, TXT, Enhypen, Le Sserafim, Seventeen, Baekho, and New Jeans. They position the RU Next group as the next Hybe girl group following Le Sserafim and New Jeans.

Fromis_9 was just never a part of Hybe’s branding. It’s a shame because they became quite a high quality group. The best visuals of any girl group, IMO, with great titles and b sides. Hybe could have been the label that finally gave them the push they needed to become a top group.

Feel So Good doesn’t get mentioned much, but that’s the song that started their new direction and where it all clicked together. That’s still my favorite from them, but they had lots of great songs.

    • Honored to have seen Feel Good live last May, one of their greatest tracks (with the My Little Society mini being their most cohesive pre-Unlock My World). It’s all the more thrilling, since we never expected it to be a part of the 5-song setlist (as it’s been snubbed in favor of We Go + DM)!

  5. Hopefully they can stay together and release more music, but even if not, I’ll never forget them. Clover is one of my favorite K-pop tracks ever.

  6. This kind of sounds like an aespa song with a touch of SNSD’s “Forever 1”

I liked Fromis a lot. I hope they get to still release music.
