Every AOA Single Ranked: From Worst to Best

I’ve listed my “top tens” for many artists, but it’s time to rummage through entire discographies and rank every single from worst to best. This feature will primarily tackle groups who have disbanded or gone on indefinite hiatus. It’s a way for me to re-evaluate my initial thoughts on their singles run. Don’t be surprised if the order has changed from past countdowns. These things are always in flux!

17. Wow War Tonight (2016)

I’m putting this at the bottom not because it’s a bad song (it’s an amazing classic, actually), but because it’s been covered by a million J-pop acts already and AOA’s version doesn’t really do anything new with it. (full review)

16. I’m Jelly Baby (AOA Cream) (2016)

I was overly harsh on this when it was released. It’s still not a favorite, but I love the funky synths and the melodies are great. (full review)

15. Bing Bing (2017)

This feels like a lesser version of other tracks, but its brassy bounce is still satisfying. (full review)

14. Confused (2013)

This big brassy sound suits them very well.

13. Come See Me (2019)

This is a nice EDM banger to send the group off. It’s not as memorable as their best work, but still embraces the campy fun they were known for. (full review)

12. Bingle Bangle (2018)

This chirpy summer sound is a bit different for AOA but includes enough of their musical hallmarks to work well. (full review)

11. Good Luck (2016)

I like this, but it feels like a comedown after their excellent 2014-15 material. The mini album’s great, though. (full review)

10. Give Me The Love (ft. T.M.Revolution) (2016)

It’s still crazy to me that AOA collaborated with T.M.Revolution of all people. The song is good, but should be amazing given this level of talent. (full review)

9. Moa (AOA Black) (2013)

Despite this being the group’s first “band” release, it actually sounds closer to the Brave Brothers produced pop that would eventually make them huge.

8. Oh Boy (2015)

AOA’s Japanese work maintained many of the elements that made their K-pop releases so successful and Oh Boy is the strongest example.

7. Excuse Me (2017)

The swirling, hypnotic chorus is such a successful hook. (full review)

6. Miniskirt (2014)

This was the big breakout moment for AOA and it’s easy to see why. It’s so slinky and addictive. (full review)

5. Get Out (2012)

The synths and overall production are super dated, but in a fun way. Great melodies help this stand out.

4. Short Hair (2014)

At this point, AOA had really found their groove. Short Hair’s chorus remains one of 2014’s most enduring.

3. Elvis (2012)

This is such a quirky sound, showing how to perfectly balance bratty sing-talk with ultra-catchy melodies and thrilling production. (full review)

2. Like A Cat (2014)

What an earworm! I’m not sure any song has ever captured feline slinkiness better. The chorus is still so addictive today. (full review)

1. Heart Attack (2015)

Fun fact: this is actually my second most-played girl group track… ever. (Well, at least since I started keeping track in mid-2015.) That’s how much I love it. As far as I’m concerned, this is K-pop (and Brave Brothers) perfection.

  1. It’s a shame AOA ended the way it did. We’ll probably never get an anniversary release

many people will say that *insert group here* has no skips, but AOA’s title tracks come close to that reality

hold up…. Do you mean that AOA”s dubstep section in “wow war tonight” is in other version?

  2. For me, these top 3 are pure pop perfection on steroids: 1) Like a Cat, 2) Miniskirt, 3) Short Hair. They make it sound so effortless, yet clearly it isn’t, cause no one, not even them, could reproduce the magic. For me, everything else is trying to find other AOA tunes that sound remotely like those.

  3. Respectfully, this is a bizarre order.

First off, Give Me the Love is easily in the top 5, and Miniskirt should always be above Like a Cat and Short Hair.

    Confused is also up there.

Glad you included AOA Cream. I like that song a lot and wish they had at least had one other song.

    • It’s a shame we didn’t get more work from each of the subunits. Black and cream each did a release and we didn’t hear from them again

        • Yeah they did have band versions of get out and Elvis, but they don’t really count. Elvis band ver to this day hasn’t broken a million views and they only performed a handful of times, they really don’t count as releases

  4. They have such a good discography!

I think 10 seconds would have made a good single. But I guess, it was too different from their original style.

  5. My top 5 aoa song unranked (because it’s hard for me to be decisive about the rank) consists: Miniskirt, Get Out, Heart Attack, Like a Cat, and EXeCUSE ME CUSE ME BABY CUSE ME CUSE ME

  6. I wish Heart Attack have a proper review, or even deserve a K-Pop Breakdown because it is truly 10/10 pop perfection. If I could say, this could be as a sister of GFriend’s Navillera – a non-stop high paced building production, back and forth bouncy verse and rap section, 2 part chorus.

  7. Wow the memories here lol. I don’t revisit AOA’s songs very frequently, because my music preferences have changed a lot in the last 7-8 years (I think that’s how long it has been since most of these songs were released). I might not actively look for these songs now, but they were one of the few groups I decided to listen to after stepping out of the bubble I was in with Girls’ Generation in 2015.

I do remember going through a couple of their mini albums, and their Japanese album, which had Like a Cat as the main single. If I had to rank them, out of pure nostalgia and sentimental value, Good Luck would be my number 1. Now, if we’re being honest I think that spot is for Like a Cat, being entirely objective.

Also, when Choa left, I really did feel the space she left. Her voice was so unique, at least in the context of the group, and I really missed listening to her.

Sheesh, I sound old writing this.

    Top 10:

    10. Elvis (never liked this)

    9. Moa (I found this to be sooo weird, I was like, why are there three of them and not the full group?)

    8. I’m Jelly Baby (loved the anime aesthetic but this song was not it)

    7. Excuse Me (I never liked it much, back then I felt annoyed about their pronunciation of “excuse me” and the “dancing with devil” part)

    6. Miniskirt (This is kind of funky, but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite. I liked the video way more, though)

    5. Bingle Bangle (I thought this was GREAT when it came out hahah, replayed the hell out of it)

    4. Heart Attack (At first listen, I thought this sucked for real. But in the end, it’s just too catchy, real dance-pop)

    3. Short Hair (Vocals here are a serve. Choa’s wo-oh-oh? That thing is the ultimate hook)

    2. Good Luck (Triple platinum in my house in 2016. My teenage self couldn’t help but replay this doing homework. I remember I loved it at first listen, that chorus hits!!)

    1. Like a Cat (I still think it’s tough to choose between one and two, but objectively, Like a cat is the better song. The production, the vocals, the concept. I think it wins from all of those perspectives)

  8. Huh, I realized I liked all the bottom songs here and was like “do I like every single song in their discography?” (Answer: no, I just have a different order from thebiaslist lol.) AOA often wind up “surprisingly better than I remembered them” for some reason. Maybe because they used more catchy earworms overall rather than multi-layered sounds.

    1. Heart Attack (Love at first listen for me)
    2. Like a Cat (This song is… impressive? Every bit of it feels designed to be catchy from the verses to the dance, and somehow this is done over an overall sticky and pretty abrasive backing track.
    3. Moya (Crazy grower for me; I get bits of it stuck in my head all the time. Maybe I just love Choa’s voice, idk. This also feels like a song which takes itself seriously. It’s simple in construction and doesn’t depend on weird gimmicks or shrieking to make itself known.)
    4. Get Out (I love the ska-rock hybrid and anthemic chorus. 2nd AOA song for me which was really “love at first listen,” which surprised me because I’d never seen people talk about it.)
    5. Come See Me (I love when Brave Sound does a more echo-y evocative direction, and the guitar riff is great. Similar example is “Sleepless Night” by 9Muses, though Come See Me is definitely more conventional.)
    6. Ai Wo Choudai (Another pop rock banger. Idk jpop but T.M. Revolution has a showstopping raw tone, which is a really great contrast with the sugary-sweet AOA parts.)
    7. Miniskirt (This song is… a bit more brass and ass than the average pop song, something that could be played in a burlesque club, and I love that for it.)
    8. Wow War Tonight (The good parts are great! I’m not however a huge fan of the dubstep drop and I feel like it goes on WAY too long.)
    9. Excuse Me (Very catchy, basically every moment feels perfectly written much like “Like a Cat.” However I find the saccharineness a bit much for me. I feel like I’m tired of the sound within 30 seconds. This is probably not the song’s fault.)
    10. Elvis (I loved this at first but it’s hard to listen to multiple times. The chorus is pretty cool, sax part meh, the dependence on the rap is… also meh? I feel like it takes a lot of risks not all of which pay off, but I’m glad it exists.)
    11. Confused (Also a fun brassy burlesque song, not quite as well-written as “Miniskirt” or something like “Alone” by Sistar. Nothing about it is bad though.)
    12. Bing Bing (First song for me which has more downsides than upsides. I like the sounds, I like the attempt at another anthemic chorus followed by a more seductive “ooh-ooh.” I do feel like the melody-writing just fails here and winds up more annoying, though. But I do find it catchy and don’t mind the parts which get stuck in my head.)
    13. Short Hair (I just find this song forgettable. If it wasn’t AOA I doubt I’d react at all to hearing it. The sounds are right for another “Heart Attack” banger but it’s too slow, not bouncy enough, the only really good part is the chorus and it’s just above average.)
    14. Oh Boy (this is the first time I’ve heard this. It sounds a bit like a reject for an SNSD Japanese title track. I don’t mind it but also forgettable.)
    15. I’m Jelly Baby (Chanmi is… not a great rapper, dang. This song’s backings are a bit annoying and also not well-written enough to have any earworms.)
    16. Good Luck (This IS catchy but in a bad way. I just always found the “Good Luck I Like You” hook annoying, and there isn’t really improving of it. I didn’t like it when Mamamoo made it more anthemic either. And nothing else about the song really sticks. It’s just loud.)
    17. Bingle Bangle (I hate this song. It feels so “fake”? Like it’s in the shape of a cute catchy pop song but the melodies are too juvenile to really make a positive impression.)

1-3 I love, 4-5 I really like, 6-8 are flawed but great, 9-11 are pretty good, 12-14 are neutral, 15-17 are bad. But only #17 is REALLY bad.

  9. I remember being put off at the time because of how in-your-face sexy AOA was. It distracted me from the music, which I came to appreciate later. Jimin and Choa gave them such a signature sound.

  10. my favorite AOA songs: some the same as on this list, and others not….but, in total, i have 18 favorites….my ranking is as follows:

    18. Bingle Bangle – probably my least-favorite AOA cut

    17. Tears Falling – nice, melodic cut with churning vocals

    16. Still Falls the Rain – nice vocals

    15. Girl’s Heart – and i do believe they showed us their heart on this one

    14. Heart Attack – i know this was their best chart-topper, but it did not do a lot for me

    13. Excuse Me – a track that blended smooth vocals with the girls in those tan short-shorts….goddamnit Choa!

    12. Under the Streetlights – a very good song, especially in the video where they sang it in the studio….A+ performance, and this is with them missing one member during this video

    11. Bing Bing – gambling-style video scene with 7 of the most beautiful women on the planet….solid procuction….Jimin’s raps are spot on….suburb vocals and all the eye-candy your eyes can take….what else can you ask for….well, i guess i could ask to be the one spinning the wheel that Hyejeong is tied to….

    10. Come See Me – the fact that they should have won Queendom that year (yea, they had
the best songs and performances) aside, this song has the kind of layers of rhythm,
melody, smooth and haunting sounds that i love….plus, their performance with this cut
should have won them some kind of award….great cut….

    9. Confused – sleek, sexy, and seductive with sultry vocals and production on top of that…
they look good in black….they look good in white….they just look damn good!

    8. Good Luck – beach scene with the ladies of AOA….what else could anyone wish for….
and oh, yea, the song is a banger too….love the trumpet and sax churning together….
    excellent

    7. Sorry – another great song from their last album….many of us are definitely “sorry” they
    are not all together anymore….

    6. Just the Two of Us – the production and vocals on this cut is excellent!….it was not
released as a single, but it should have been

    5. 10 Seconds – mellow groove, hypnotic singing at their best….this is one of those songs
where i’m wanting Choa in my arms, for more than :10 Seconds,” for sure….they sang
and performed this song to perfection!

    4. Time – one of the best displays, in my opinion, of their complete vocal ability….a very
melodic and heart-jerking song….it starts with a blended intro from their two main
vocalist, Choa and Yuna, and ends with an even more outstanding blend by the two….
    a masterful song….

    3. Like A Cat – this may be the best overall produced track produced by Brave Brothers for
AOA….their vocals blend well with the sound and their performances in the video is
classic AOA….they were truly the total package of what a kpop fan was looking for in
a female kpop group….i know they were in my top 5 favorites when they were active….

    2. Miniskirt – this is the song (along with After School’s “First Love”) is what solidified my love for kpop and made me a fan!….all 7 of the ladies blew my mind and Choa munchin
on that strawberry….damn, that stole my heart….not to mention Seolhyun in the bed at
the beginning of the video and Hyejeongthat bathtub at the end of the video….good lord

    1. Short Hair – “Miniskirt” would be my AOA #1 if it were not for this song….the production is sound and the vocals are off-the-charts….with the classic Brave Brothers’ production blending with AOA charm, charisma, and harmonizing vocals….
i can listen to this song on loop after loop after loop….
