THIS WEEK IN K-POP: Ranking the New Releases from January 5-11

At the end of each month, I compile my top three K-pop title tracks and list a ton of honorable mentions. In 2025, I thought I’d try something new and add a weekly feature to supplement my monthly round-up. Each Sunday, I’ll offer a compendium of the week’s new releases featured on the blog. And even more than that, I’ll attempt to rank them from my least-to-most-liked. I invite you to share your own rankings as well. The comments section of these posts is also a great spot to discuss anything that has happened in K-pop during the week.

Make sure to click on the title of any release to read the full review and see its rating. Consider this your one stop Bias List shop each and every Sunday!

  1. AHHH a new feature?! I’m looking forward to more of those throughout the year. I think it’s also a nice way to catch up on the releases for the week.

BTW I’m curious to hear your thoughts on the covers that SM groups did during this weekend’s SMTown show in honor of their 30th anniversary (if you watched it)? I think it was really nice how each group modified their respective covers to match their style.

    • I don’t have any thoughts yet because I’m planning on watching the whole ten (!) hour concert in pieces over the course of the week. I’m only an hour in at the moment so I haven’t seen any of the cover stages. I’m obsessed with the remix of Lucifer the bg trainees dance to, though!

      • I liked the added percussion for aespa’s Rum Pum Pum cover, but it was overall a straightforward cover. Talking about straightforward covers, I watch the KBS Global Song festival ‘Perfume’ cover (I think by a ZB1, TWS, and an n.ssign member). I remember you saying you liked it more than the original, so I thought there would be some interesting production differences, but I found it to be pretty much an exact cover. Was it the vocal tones that made it pop out? In the original song, the members’s vocal tones are not as distinct from each other?

      • For reference, the cover stages start by hour 4.5 of the concert. There’s also this SM BG megamix before the cover that the trainees danced to, with Overdose, Sherlock, and the Suju debut song afaik in there.

  2. I’m going to look forward to this feature so I can get a quick taste of the songs of the week – sometimes I don’t really have the time to check out every single release individually, and then I end up missing it, so this is a great reminder.

BND also take the top spot for me, with BSS a close second. I love Gfriend’s release for the nostalgia factor alone, though I wish they’d gone even more all-in melody-wise, like their biggest work.

I also saw that M.O.N.T’s latest release hasn’t been reviewed here, but I came across it and quite like it – a fun little bop, I appreciate the punk rock-ish sound. Side note, is this kind of sound making a comeback? I loved &TEAM’s releases from last year, BND also made great use of instrumentals this week, and in general I feel like these kinds of songs, even if not really reinventing the wheel on this genre, always hit. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OS5_KXxvnY

    • I am a big MONT fan, my favorite snot nose punk indie kpop group, so I listened and enjoyed it, and folded it into my collection of MONT songs. I played the shit out of “Anti-Hero” during quarantine. Also from earlier, their “Rock Paper Scissors”.

  3. I wish this month would end so there’s nothing really interesting happening. I add some artists outside the K-pop repertoire because… I don’t know hahaha! Anyway, if I find another artist outside of this repertoire I’ll add it. I also didn’t really understand the exact purpose of this post, but ok, I’ll participate because it’s easy for me to classify the songs released so far because I have a folder with the evaluation of each song so far. Now, mentioning the songs I reviewed below:

Notable B-Side: Seventeen BSS – Happy Alone

    12. XLOV – I’mma Be
    11. Kwon Eunbi – Snowfall (ft. Coogie)
    10. Minnie – Blind Eyes Red
    9.KickFlip – Umm Great
    8. Onew – Winner
    7. M.O.N.T – OMW
    6. Seventeen BSS – CBZ (Prime Time)
    5. 2Z – Something Special
    4. GFriend – Season Of Memories
    3. 2Z – Great Force
    2. BoyNextDoor – If I Say I Love You
    1. Ovan, Joosiq, Lunch, Piano Man, Im Soo, Kim Changwoon – The Year

I was supposed to add GFriend’s song tomorrow but I’m going to put it here because I’ve already heard it. I also wasn’t supposed to review the band 2Z, because technically it’s not K-pop, but I’ve already added bands to my other K-pop playlists so no problem, difficult times require difficult choices

  4. This is actually a great new feature to start the year, congrats for having added it on!

BTW, in my mind I’mma Be to me is being a real riser: the first time I’ve listened to it I wasn’t even able to reach the end of the song, but as long as it’s currently one of the most viral k-pop sensations on TikTok, I have to say there’s something fascinating – maybe the choreo? – in that lack of melody, groove and structure.
