Song Review: Lucy – Wakey Wakey

K-band Lucy is down to a trio at the moment as member Gwangil serves his mandatory enlistment. Seeing them as three doesn’t seem right, but they’re plunging ahead with an upcoming new album and pre-release single Wakey Wakey (잠깨). The band have promised new things this era, but judging from this track their signature sound is very much intact.

I have a great deal of affection for Lucy and their music, but if I’m being honest I haven’t really been obsessed with one of their songs since 2021. Their whimsical blend of band and violin remains engrossing and their musical personality is as winning as ever. However, they’ve struggled to recapture the melodic magic of their best material. Wakey Wakey is jaunty but slight. It’s a toe-tapper in the most inconsequential way — the kind of song you might find rattling through your memory throughout the day but quickly forget as you move onto other things. However, I appreciate the musical nods to the quirkier side of their discography. The energy here reminds me a bit of 2020’s Jogging, though I’m not sure Wakey Wakey will enjoy the same longevity.

  1. I mean, its bright, its chipper, and there is nothing wrong with the song or performance per se. But it sounds like they released a song because it is time to release a song but they don’t really like this one much but it was time and here it was. They are just not owning it.
