Song Review: N.Flying – Everlasting

It’s crazy to remember just how huge N.Flying were in 2019 with their breakthrough hit Rooftop. For a short period, they were the K-pop band of note. Member changes and military enlistment complicated their run, leading to a precipitous drop in popularity with the general public. Now, their music feels almost interchangeable with their FNC peers, pleasing fans but struggling to break through beyond that.

Everlasting (만년설) is another nice song — perfectly sturdy but wholly forgettable. It’s amazing how different their current material is from the personality-rich pop rock of their debut era. There’s definitely a drive to become “serious artists,” whatever that might mean. Everlasting has all the hallmarks needed to be taken seriously, but forgets a melody worth repeating. In this way, the song spins its wheels, hinging on relatively flat refrains that sounds worthy even as it keeps you at arm’s length. I could hear this soundtracking a drama where you’re already invested in the characters and plot, but on its own Everlasting tends to fade into the background.

    • On a related note, Nick, I was trying to figure out how long I have been commenting on your blog. I clicked back to see what I (thought I had wrote) about NFlying back when, because I am a Hot Potato, and couldn’t find anything.

I thought it must have been 2016-2017 or so, because I was between jobs and had time to faff off, but the earliest I can find is about 2019 or so. Was it only that recent? Or was there a purge? (Did I do the purge, or wordpress?) Not that what I have to say about being a Hot Potato is Important for All Time, just an idle curiosity.

  1. I really missed these guys. This isn’t a scratch on their best material, but it isn’t awful and I’m happy enough to have it as new music from them. I’ll go listen to the rest of this album soon–we have a full album!

  2. You’re right, it feels distinctly like an OST, which is not appealing to me. But I do want to say the other day I was listening to their track “Video Therapy” which I dearly love, and I was wondering if they’d disbanded. I’m glad to see they’re still active— they’ve been together a whole 10 years now, which is very impressive.
