Song Review: CRAVITY – SET NET G0?!

Five years since their debut, CRAVITY are in a rebirth phase. They’ve changed leaders and teased their new album with images of the members emerging from giant eggs covered in amniotic fluid. Yes, you read that correctly. And yes, it’s kind of awesome in its sheer nerve. Rebirths in K-pop don’t always mean drastic shifts in sound or style, and thankfully new single SET NET G0?! retains many of the group’s strongest elements.

In fact, this song finds a way to stuff just about every CRAVITY sound into one package. SET NET G0 moves through several distinct segments, from the brittle funk of its verses to the soaring melody of the pre-chorus to the electro-stomp of the chorus to the requisite mid-song hip-hop breakdown. Amazingly, these disparate elements never feel jarring, though you all know how I feel about a energy-shifting rap verse. (SET NET G0 earns a sliver of a bonus point for at least shoehorning it into a different part of the song than usual.) Overall, the song works very well despite a few shortcomings.

SET NET G0 opens with one of these weaker moments. I’m not sold on the descending melodies of the verses. They fizzle energy rather than build it, but once a strong kick of percussion joins the mix we’re off to the races. From here, the song vaults into its strongest turn — a brilliant pre-chorus underlined by thick synth textures. The grittier chorus also works well, even if it feels ripped from another song entirely. These two elements join forces for SET NET G0‘s finale, and it’s here that the song finally makes sense. We could do with another fifteen seconds of this payoff, but even with its slight frame the track is satisfying and feels destined for many replays thanks to a few ear-catching highlights.

  1. I like how this feels like a natural maturation and shift for them but the music is still great! Loving the strings, synths and guitars too😍

    8.5/10❤️

  2. That fuckass trap/hip-hop breakdown, this isn’t 2018-2020 wtf 😭

But I LOVE the funky production, and that electric guitar-led chorus is amazing. I really wish we had a pack of soaring melodies for an extra kick in the butt as well as extended run time (istg is a bridge and third chorus that hard to create???), cause it could easily be in the 9s for me.

    8.25 (7, 9, 9, 8) for me.

  3. The weird sexual egg-hatching concept had me all eyes and ears for this comeback. Sometimes it feels like nobody’s willing to do anything crazy in kpop anymore.
This song is normal af however. It’s very cute, I don’t mind it. I wish they were writhing in amniotic fluid in the MV but that probably would have felt a little out of place.

  4. I love Cravity…every single one of their titles (including MyTurn and BoogieWoogie) and a whole bunch of bsides have always lifted my mood, always.

This song is no exception.  I think they could’ve gone even bigger at the end and make it a 3+ minute song, but it’s ok, it’s still good.  I love the switch ups, the rap part, I love that I can hear their voices, I like the music, I like the song, period.  8.75/10 for now, but it will probably grow on me.

PS: I find it depressing that CRAVITY only has 193K monthly listeners on Spotify.  Five years, a remarkable discography and a company that promotes then relatively well.  What else do you need to make it big in Kpop?  Maybe it’s 2minutes senseless autotuned songs.  Agh😓

    • The Spotify listeners were around 500-600k during Masterpiece because of Groovy and by extension Fly. And I think the release of Evershine got the listeners to about 400k-ish (don’t quote me on this stat). Depending on how well this comeback does we can see the numbers around there again.

  5. Finally, a song that doesn’t bore me. Sounds like kpop, Is kpop.

That bonkers bass intro to the chorus. Hah! So much dance concept one can do along that. Me, it would be robot or noodle arms. A robot with noodle arms.

It does need an outro, but hopefully a concert remix will take care of that.

Yes for me. Mid to high 8’s is about right.

  6. The title track lacks a certain spark for me—it just doesn’t connect. The first half of the album is okay, and while I like the production choices on some songs, the melodies feel a bit diluted, as if they’re only scratching the surface of what could’ve been. Underdog stands out as my favorite, even though it has a clunky trap part like the title track. Still, it’s much more engaging, and the two songs that follow are a fun listen as well

  7. I was very skeptical about this comeback just for the reason the old creative team got the boot. I was really ready to hate Set Net Go for that.

I really don’t like how short this is, especially because every section (even the rap break) is interesting and has a purpose. As you said it could go for fifteen more seconds. There’s a part of me that wishes it didn’t end like that, the outro doesn’t sound like an outro to me it sounds like the second part of the chorus. So I was pretty pissy with my first listen.

But then, and it’s because Cravity are my ults, it grew on me within the span of four listens. Welp, so much for my nit-picking.

The album is good, not their best, but there are still highlights. Rendez-vous, Love Me Again, and Stadium stand out to me. I also think Swish is a great example of songs that try to go for that sound.

  8. As a Masterpiece worshipper, I had my eyes on this comeback. Maybe the overall album is not as tight as Masterpiece but I will gladly return to it. Set net go is on heavy rotation, there’s is something fascinating going on there
