Song Review: STAYC – I Want It

Earlier this year, STAYC found their dancefloor groove with the addictive Bebe. Though that song didn’t totally click with me initially, it gradually grew into one of my most-played tracks of the year. With new summer single I Want It, they group keeps the energy high with an early-2010’s EDM twist.

As soon as I Want It‘s rugged electro beat unfurls, it’s hard not to hum Icona Pop’s 2012 mega-hit I Love It in your head. That song has become highly influential throughout the years, so it’s not too surprising to hear its ripples continue to spread here. Derivative or not, I’m just happy to hear a girl group song unfold with a constant pulse. Too many title tracks this year dip in and out of their groove so often they feel fragmented and difficult to parse. I Want It is big, dumb fun — a simple pop song through and through.

This aspect can be both a strength and weakness. At times, I Want It‘s hooks are almost too simple and repetitive to land. I’m not a huge fan of its “I want it!” post-chorus despite that being the song’s catchiest calling card. Its chirpiness leans just a bit too far into the obnoxious side of bubblegum pop for me. The more melodic verses and chorus work better, offering a sugar rush of upbeat summery vibes without resorting to simple catchphrases. In the end, I think I Want It‘s bombastic energy will steamroll over any hesitation I have about the track as a whole, which is actually the exact same trajectory Bebe took.

  1. It’s a fun summer track (and a wonderful ear bleach from that horrible EPEX song), I love the propulsive electro production, though I wish the hooks weren’t too simple and a little repetitive. But nevertheless, it does a good job as a silly, stupid fun summer song.

    8.5 (8, 9, 8, 9) for me.

  2. stayc summer is the only thing saving me from crashing out over those God awful kpop demon hunter songs😁( they sound like if Garage band and Disney princess music had a baby) and they are also my ults so this gets an easy high score 😍

Also this was so urethral💗( those who get it, get it)

    9/10🌺🐬🍹

  4. The problem with simple songs simply done it that they can sound like a zillion other songs that do the same.

I was reminded of the chorus of beep beep beep imma Rocket Girl by Stellar. I mean I dig this sound and dig it and I want it and will probably get it off itunes anyway, but novel it is not.

Sharing for the kids here, because sharing is caring.

    • People used to say this was like, the worst debut song of all time lol.
I mean it sucks but it is um… different! Which is more than we can say for a lot of debuts these days. I’m not sure I prefer this though lol

  5. it’s the first time in a long time that a stayc song may not be for me, at least at first listen. The “good things we okay” refrain is just a little too repetitive for me, it grates on the ear somehow. This could be a grower, but idk if I’m really going to come back to it and give it that opportunity. I am happy to hear a resurgence of an Icona Pop sound, and with a different chorus it could have been something I’d like.

  6. It can take a long time for a STAYC song to sink in, but I think this will eventually, just like most of their recent songs. The “simplicity” may be deceiving: they and their team are super smart….an 8/10 for now, but that will certainly rise a notch or two in a few months ☀️☀️☀️

  7. I was depending on Twice to deliver a song of the summer, but it looks like Stayc is filling in for them this year.

  8. Definitely I Love It, but it shares a chorus with Madonna’s “Give me all your lovin” ft Nicki Minaj and M.I.A.

Also, since you didn’t review “Lover, Killer”, my take on it was just Fancy pt2. I like it a lot more than Fancy, though

    • It sounds so much like TWICE (Specially early TWICE) because the producer is the same guy.

I almost forgot about that one, it was a nice earworm, but forgettable.

I want more of Poppy / Bebe kind of songs, tbh.

    • “Lover, Killer” didn’t get a MV iirc. Maybe this is why Nick haven’t posted about it.

About FANCY, i’m very dubious about any relation. Are you referencing to STAYC’s cover?

I really don’t get how close it could be to “Give me all your lovin”.

  9. the chorus just kinda come and go (I didn’t even realize that was the chorus until the final chorus lol)

Definitely needed a bigger/more catchy chorus imo
