Even by K-pop standards, it’s been a barren December. For the first time in forever, I don’t know how I’ll do a “monthly round-up” at the end of the month because there hasn’t been a single song I’ve played much after reviewing it for the blog. In a perfect world, Monsta X’s Joohoney would arrive to save us today with his pre-release Push.
Push pairs him with agency-mate Rei from girl group IVE, who sings portions of the hook and the second verse. Apart from that, the song isn’t all that notable. It’s incredibly sparse, forging quiet percussion with the occasional bed-squeaking noise and plenty of moody, muted synths. The sung portions of the track are pretty but very unmemorable and the centerpiece amounts to little more than a spoken repetition of the song’s title. For those looking for mood and meaning, Push will probably satisfy. However, I find it quite slight as a piece of music and a strange choice for a pre-release.

I’m pretty selective about what I review these last few weeks of the year because I’m working on all the year-end countdowns and they’re quite time-consuming.
Regarding that song, it’s not as bad as I was expecting. It’s nothing I’d probably seek out again, but it’s not awful for what it is.
