Song Review: ChoCo1 x ChoCo2 (ChoCo Family) – Frenzy

The co-ed ChoCo1 x ChoCo2 debuted earlier this year with a bit of online controversy that felt manufactured to spawn discussion. The actual music was quite dire, reheating sounds popularized by ALLDAY PROJECT last year. Now, they’re back promoting b-side Frenzy. This one’s more palatable than its predecessor but still struggles to justify the group’s place in K-pop’s overstuffed landscape.

Frenzy earns extra points by not shouting its title at us over and over again. Instead, the hook is sung-chanted. Like so much modern K-pop, it has a sing-song nature reminiscent of a nursery rhyme. Coupled with the group’s young age, this makes all the badass posing feel kind of forced. Given different production (I’d love to hear big festival EDM), this could be a nice bit of guilty pleasure fun, but the production starts and stops too often to gain any real appeal. At most points, it simply feels like a kid messing around with a drumkit as their sister dances around the room singing “la la la.”
