Song Review: Yuna (ITZY) – Ice Cream

ITZY are currently enjoying unexpected virality thanks to their 2020 b-side That’s A No No gaining traction on SNS. It’s the perfect time for the girls to be promoting, and if a full group comeback isn’t in the works a solo debut is the next best thing. Following the group’s leader Yeji, youngest member Yuna has released her first solo work.

Ice Cream does a nice job harnessing Yuna’s star power over a light synth-powered track. The song actually sounds more like Twice than ITZY. It’s glossy, upbeat and coated in a bright pop sheen that fits Yuna’s appealing voice. This is the kind of song that’s almost impossible to dislike. It doesn’t put a foot wrong and makes no moves that would polarize listeners. It’s simply nice, fluffy pop music.

But while i enjoy the song, what’s keeping me from loving Ice Cream is the flatness of its melodies and arrangement. No element within the track has range, meaning it bops along nicely without ever reaching a peak or even building tension. A secondary hook with a splashier sound would have done wonders to give Ice Cream lasting interest. As it stands, this is the kind of song I’d happily put on any playlist but wouldn’t wait with bated breath to hear.

  1. it fits yuna really well but not as ear-wormy as yeji’s air. the chorus is catchy tho and i like the “it’s so pretty it’s so dreamy it’s so sweety”! very fitting for yuna and clearly meant to be trendy for social media. i’m mostly just happy exy wrote on this track.

  2. really not a bad song, doesn’t have that much personality though but enjoyable. This is the kind of song I expected from Wonyoung solo on the REVIVE album.

  3. i was actually expecting something more upbeat and bubblier for yuna’s debut, but this vibe works for her too. it’s nice but doesn’t really go in the direction i would’ve liked, i’d probably give it a 7.5-7.75

  4. If the instrumental had varied just a little between the verses and the prechorus I think I would’ve liked this a lot more. Still nice as is, and Yuna’s performance sells it, so I’m not unhappy about it!

Have you heard BTOB’s new single? I don’t think they’re really promoting it, but it’s nice that they’ve come together for the first time in a while.

  5. Sounds a lot like an Ive song, or, more accurately, second-half-career Apink, most notably Dilemna if you listen to the verses.

  6. i actually like this song, but the instrumental is pretty much the same the whole song. The song doesn’t grow in any way and i think that’s the weakness of the song. The other 3 songs in the album are more interesting instrumental wise. If this song had a built up or something it would have been much better. Rating the same

  7. yuna is my bias in itzy but i have the same issue with this as i did with artms’s virtual angel a while ago: the instrumental goes absolutely nowhere. refuses to move. and for a person like me who loves songs that have banging production (think bebe, 404, or tunnel vision) i can’t give this higher than an 8.25.

now time to go rewatch yuna’s u-go-girl stage for the thousandth time… if only she debuted with a song like that!
