Buried Treasure: Lucy – Chameleon

A K-pop act’s title track isn’t always the best song on their album, even if it’s the one most people will hear. Sometimes, b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Lucy’s new album is a bit odd in the fact that over half of it is comprised of re-records of old tracks while its best new material is all shoved toward the front. Album opener Sprout is wonderful in a grand, cinematic way, but the sheer energy of Chameleon knocked me out of my seat the first time I heard it.

It’s been a long time since I’ve written about one of Lucy’s album tracks, but this one sits up there with the best of their discography. On their face, the melodies and arrangement are pretty typical of the group, but you can really hear drummer Gwang Il’s impact after returning from military service. The rhythm section is tight and blazing and sucks the guitar into its whirlwind. This results in a breakneck pace throughout the track, with every element working hard to outdo the other. This also extends to the vocals, which unfold in an absolute fury. I’m especially taken with the post-chorus vocal refrains, which are so intense they’re practically a scream. The group keeps upping the ante from here. It’ll get you blood flowing for sure.

  1. Wowww… I love it so much. Thanks for your recommendation!!! The opening reminds me of Discord by QWER a lot but then the song keeps building up the momentum and becoming more and more intense. The after chorus break was soooo gooood!!!😭😭😭😍
