There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.
As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.
Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

Only 5.5 for Taller Than You? That’s criminal! haha. It’s honestly my favorite by them.

decalcomanie is a 10 for me. i wonder, nick, so many of these songs have grown a lot for you. will you ever do a larger risers/fallers post for this?

Probably not. I plan to use this feature as a sort of retrospective risers/fallers for older groups/songs.

The tragedy of Mamamoo is the Decalcomanie was really immediately obviously their peak. 1) It’s a fantastic song by itself 2) Everything they’ve done since has been not great.
Part of it, I think, is they decided to change concepts and their image do kind of do what everyone else was doing. Like I said on Yuju’s most recent song, just because the artist likes it doesn’t mean everyone else will. Of course, I’m clearly in the minority here, since they’ve been immensely popular despite the drop in music quality. (That being said, AOA proved that you could turn an ok song into a good one just by rearranging it)
But, taking this drop in quality and adding in their appearance on Queendom, which really soured me on them in general, I just do not look forward to their music in the way I did before 2017. Moonbyul’s had some nice solos and that’s about it. People complain about X group never getting to live up to their potential, but it’s always about a group like Stellar (love them) or Pristin or something, and never a group that has unquestionably had a great deal of success, but with inferior work.

Taller than you is hilarious and I love that they decided to make a song and a video about something that is clearly an inside joke.
It’s one of those songs that’s not on any of my playlist but I do go seek it out on purpose pretty often. Such as IKON Dumb&dumber or Oh My Girl Dolphin.

HIP is a 10 imo. I feel like it’s in its own genre and will not be replicated
