RED VELVET: A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. The way you might be the only person on the internet to not glaze Psycho as much as the others do 😭 also, Cosmic never getting a 9 or above is diabolical, she’s a 10 for me 💔

    • Oh “Lupin” is easily one of Kara’s absolute best hits. I guess my middle schooler self didn’t fully appreciate just how good I (or most k-pop fans) had it when producers like Sweetune & YYJ ruled the k-pop world.

Do you have a top 5 RV title tracks by any chance? If yes, what would they be?

  2. I see that Zimzalabim grew on you quite a lot. It has always been one of my favourite Red Velvet title tracks, and I wish in the year of our Lord 2026, we could have more Zimzalabims instead of all these obnoxious club beat monstrosities.

My top 5(/6) RV title tracks would probably be:

    1. Dumb Dumb

    2. Happiness

    3. Ice Cream Cake

    4. Red Flavour

    5. Zimzalabim/Power Up

    2. Russian Roulette (10/10)
    3. Dumb Dumb (10/10)
    4. Bad Boy (9.5/10)
    5. Umpah Umpah (9.25/10)

    1. Dang what did One of These Nights do to you?

      Ditto for RBB.

Psycho and Bad Boy are easily their worst titles.

I’d say Red Flavor is iconic but not at all a 10. It’s definitely top 8 but not top 5.

    2. Red Flavor introduced me to Red Velvet, fell in love with their other songs after that. Psycho is also a personal favorite, mostly because it brings back great memories; it was one of the first comebacks me and my siblings experienced as newer k-pop fans and we all loved it. Queendom would also be a bit higher. They were just a very consistent group with catchy songs and some all-timers.

    4. Damn, poor One of these Nights. It is pretty boring though, I have to admit. I like the Joe Millionaire version though

As for my T5 RV single, I’d have to say maybe Bad Boy (english version preferred) > Cosmic > Ice Cream Cake > Russian Roulette > Automatic=Queendom=Rookie. I generally prefer their B-sides

    5. I am a HUGE One of These Nights stan, both the single and the EP. I was getting into R&B back then and I think it was a good opening to explore other artists. I always crossed my fingers for them to return to a similar sound and I was so happy with the release of Bad Boy, it’s like my prayers had been heard after two years.

I became a massive Red Velvet fan after Bad Boy but I must admit I felt kind of sad because they never returned to that sound. The closest thing to sound like Bad Boy in their next releases is Psycho, which is not even that much of an R&B track. Regardless, I think Red Velvet definitely has a discography with many highlights.

My top five songs from them is:

      1. Bad Boy.
      2. Cosmic.
      3. Light Me Up.
      4. Automatic.
      5. One of These Nights.
