Song Review: Alice – Show Down

Alice - Show DownWhenever an artist scores a top spot in my year-end countdowns, my ears are wide open for their follow-up. More often than not, I’m underwhelmed. That’s just the way these things go. Alice’s Dance On is a difficult track to improve upon, and Show Down doesn’t come close. But, it still retains the group’s upbeat dance sound in a fun way.

Apart from an ill-advised slowdown during the post-chorus breakdowns, Show Down keeps its tempo brisk and exciting. In this way, it reminds me of Brave Girls’ Chi Mat Ba Ram. The percolating synths that drive the track are satisfying and beg for a more thrilling set of melodies. Show Down‘s chorus is a bunt when it could have been a home run, and this lack of ambition lessens its overall effect. It’ll make a nice companion to Dance On, but it’s definitely the lesser of the two tracks.

  1. Not as big of a fan of this, high 7’s at best for me.

To me this sounds like ChatGPT asked to write a bright theme girl group kpop song. The song construction hits every single expectation, at every mark. It is lifted by that nice bubbly percolating synth line in the chorus, which gives off flavors of EDM, but it just isn’t enough to lift the whole song for me.

I love the mixed metaphors. Shouldn’t that have been “touchdown”? HAHA 🙂

  3. Fantastic song doesn’t disappoint at all , i like this waay better than IVE’s latest comeback that a lot of people found a pop masterpiece , no nursery rhymes or too high notes here

  4. A really good and catchy song, not a bad follow up to their last really really good song. They deserve the success that we know they won’t get, it’s such a shame.

K-pop now mostly sounds like a bunch of 12 year olds chanting incantations over a backing track of marbles going through a washing machine, so it’s always a pleasant surprise when something genuinely good like this gets released.

These gems are getting harder to find though.
