Song Review: BBGirls – One More Time

BBGirls - One More TimeAfter setting the industry (and my playlist) alight in 2021, Brave Girls released one final album before leaving their agency and rebranding as BBGirls. That name feels very awkward, but I’m so happy these four decided to stick together. Their music is great counterprogramming to K-pop’s younger girl groups, confident in its ability to showcase what BBGirls do best.

One More Time is another big, slightly retro, dance track. It borrows many of the hallmarks of ex-producer and agency head Brave Brothers, though it can’t quite replicate his magic touch. I want to love this song the way I’ve loved many songs in their discography, but for now I’m settling on a slightly bemused “like.”

My biggest issue with One More Time is its repetition. There are just so many “give it to me baby”s, without much modulation or progression. It’s catchy, but a little flat. The chugging instrumental picks up some of the slack, adding a sense of drama even if the tempo could have been kicked up a few notches. I especially like the stabbing keys that open the track. Ironically, they’re very reminiscent of Sistar’s Bravesound-produced Alone.

The producers have given funk legend Rick James a writing credit on the track, presumably for interpolating the “give it to me baby” from his 1981 hit of the same name. I don’t hear the similarity, but I guess you can’t be too safe these days. If anything, One More Time could do with sampling the explosive brass featured in that classic track.

  1. Apart from an underwhelming chorus, an otherwise strong track! I added it to my playlist, but tbh I don’t see it lasting more than a week… Either way pretty solid, 8 from me.

  2. Why can’t a song set up a banging beat, and just let it ride. Why all the slow downs? This version is just screaming out for a remix by a dance DJ. All said DJ has to do is lay a beat underneath for 3:30 and done.

Also, for a song that is all about “give it to me baby”, it is playing rather coy with the vibe.

Also, the vocal processing is all tin cans.

  3. I like the track. The girls sound so good; their voices go together so well. The repetition didn’t bother me but I can see how it could. For me, the biggest issue with the track is the lack of a build or climax. It doesn’t have to be an overused EDM one with increasingly fast percussion or a dubstep breakdown. The song just needs some oomp

  4. It feels like this track could directly connect to their absolutely incredible previous album (Thank You). And right from the start, the instrumentals and their vocals captivated me, possibly making this a 9+. However, the repetitive lyrics and lack of dynamics reduce the experience a bit. It feels like something is missing. Some ad-libs and more vocal layering might have gone a long way.

Nonetheless, I’m just glad they keep releasing new music. The track is still great, even if I’m nitpicking here a bit. Spot-on review as usual, Nick.

  5. The writers probably wanted to keep it to around 3 minutes for streaming purposes, but if I were them, I wouldn’t have had the entire chorus open the song – maybe just the first half. The song needs a prechorus; the verses aren’t very long, so it feels like we’re just hearing “give it to me baby” over and over.

  6. Um. I like that weird thing they do at the end of each verse; that’s unexpected. (“Toniiiight” and “Eyes on Meeeeee”)

    Very repetitive.

BUT. I think someone’s gonna make a killer mashup of this song and “After Like”; I can almost hear the notes from “I will survive” threading behind this song.

  7. I know that none of them have the magic touch of Brave Brothers, but this one has stuck with me, I love the disco instrumental and those saxophone intrusions fascinate me.

    • There’s so much more going for Lemonade’s arrangement with the funk track and the ladies vocals.

The final 30 seconds where they layer the hook/post-chorus over the rapid fire yet hushed background vocals? So good.

  8. yeah when they got to the spot where the chorus should be and they just did the intro again i was like “that’s it?” the song deserves much more than what’s in it.

  9. If it added something more to the instrumental and vocal line for the final chorus and moments of the song, it really would have elevated the track so much. I also think switching some of the “give it to me baby” lines would have been less repetitive if they at least alternated between some form of similar Korean phrases and the English. It would have made it a bit more public friendly in Korea, made it less repetitive, and a bit more… Brave Girls? I just don’t associate them with having a ton of English in their songs, for some reason. Last, I do think the timing of this release was a bit off. Given how successful their songs have been for the summers and their own desire to be “summer queens,” going for a Sistar style summer hit would have been a stronger debut for them as BBGirls and assured listeners they have maintained their core identity. Then One More Time could have worked perfectly fine as a title track on a repackage released sometime in September or early October.
