Song Review: V (BTS) – Love Me Again

V - Love Me AgainThe BTS solo roll-out continues in earnest with member V scheduled to release multiple songs ahead of his debut album in September. V’s unique, husky voice has always been one of the group’s secret weapons — a very appealing tone that adds character and texture to anything it touches. The challenge, then, is to find the right material to capitalize on this strength.

Love Me Again is all tone. If you simply love listening to V’s voice, this should check the boxes you need. If you’re looking for a compelling song composition, you may need to wait for future releases. While it’s indeed lovely to hear V sing without many instrumental flourishes getting in the way, Love Me Again is a wisp of a track. It’s very much background coffeeshop music, hushed and languid and pleasant. If I didn’t think Army would kill me, I might even call it dull.

On the plus side, V sounds great. I suspect most fans will come back to that response over and over, as there’s not much to chew on within the track itself. If ASMR was a genre of song, V could definitely rule those charts. There’s something very calming and sleepy about Love Me Again‘s repetition and atmosphere, but as the first taste of his album I can’t help but be underwhelmed.

    • Reading comments first, I’m so disappointed, why are you comparing this song to BTS songs!! This is a Kim Taeyhung song!! He sounds amazing, the song is wonderful. It is Tae! Not the rap line! Geez! And who cares if he chose a cave to film in, maybe he should have picked a crowded bar scene with half dressed girls! His MV is perfect, I’m proud of him, I’m supporting my Tae!

      • You sound like an ignorant biased solo. This is opinion.. the song itself is brining.. the only thing interesting in it is taes voice. This is always my issue with his music. He never shows anything different vocally or provides any variety. I love sweet night and winter bear.. top songs in that genre and winterbear basically has no lyrics lol but at least he gave us a tad variety with the vocals. This is his vibe and style he likes… but when giving an unbiased opinion.. it’s just meh. If this was anybody else’s song… the review would be the same. This isn’t everyone’s vibe and I can’t even remember what it sounds like bc it’s forgettable. It doesn’t have the same catchy melodys of winter bear or sweet night. It’s boring, the video is boring.. it just feels like it’s all missing something… and if every track he releases for the rest of his career stays in this same basic style… it just feels boring. I have hopes for his title track that it will be a bit more upbeat and give some variety .. feel like he will even have a dance for it… or hopefully it’s somehow unique to the rest of these tracks. You can’t blame others for their opinions

  1. This is pretty much what I’d expect from a Taehyung solo, so I am good with it. I am also into this sort of “background coffeeshop music.” I love a good, well-structured song that takes you on a ride but sometimes you just need something to lay back and relax, and I think Taehyung is just the right vocalist to deliver that. I feel like I could comment the same thing I said about Jaehyun’s NCT LAB yesterday. I’ll cherish any song where I can hear Taehyung’s voice for three minutes straight lol.

  2. iirc the pre-release for Jungkook was also “atmospheric” complete with rain sounds.
If this scratches your itch, fine. For me, this falls under the “sounds jazzy, isn’t” class. The guitar has some swing, but the vocal line is simpler on the beat.

    • That wasn’t a prerelease for jungkook lmao it was a song he made 3 years ago… wrote and produced himself just for army. It’s been on SoundCloud this whole time and jungkooks song has SO much more going on production wise. There’s a massive difference in the songs… and then v put out rainy days which sounds like his version of still with you by jungkook… so it’s a bit confusing tbh. But jungkook only debuted a single … it was just a gift for army that they finally put on all streaming platforms and same with my you, which was another fan song released a year ago. These are vs album songs… they’re totally different

  3. This just makes me realize how great Baekhyun is to me. V and Jaehyun absolutely do have the pipes (forever only was one of my faves last year) but they haven’t (to me) developed that kind of confidant/storyteller vocal dynamic that makes Bacon absolutely gripping. I think both of them need to have more texture and meat in their songs right now. Or maybe they need to step out of their comfort zone.Maybe RM will give Colde V’s number. Now id love to hear that. It’s an absolutely beautiful performance, but it’s not going to stick with me.

    • Agree about the storyteller comment.

It is more evident when V sings covers of the “Great American Songbook” as in this clip below. The vocal doesn’t have any problems per se. And he knows enough to surround himself with musicians who have some swing. If I heard this during an evening jazz club dinner, it would be fine evening, but not one for the memory books. Competent. But when one chooses a vocal genre and songs that have been around for 70-90 years, it’s not easy.

Its a confidence thing, an experience and practice thing, a listening and following thing, a daily habit thing.

compared to Louis and Ella. Ella swings it so much that when she sings on the beat it sounds syncopated. As the Brits say, like chalk and cheese.

      • I agree with you. V’s always had my favourite voice in BTS but he just never quite gets there considering his potential. And his love of jazz has always felt a bit aesthetic to me – like he realizes all those jazz singers are super cool so he sings the songs in a disaffected way because that’s what he thinks coolness is. But even though all those singers sing with ease (because they’re masterful) there’s so much energy in those jazz classics! I wish he’d bring some of that out. Maybe he will in the other tracks

        • So much of being a great jazz singer is having life experience and conveying that through someone else’s words. It’s a lifetime journey if you’ve serious. I hope he learns more about being a real singer and not just a vocalist.

        • You’re comparing a 20 something year old guy with people with decades of expenrience *sigh*
I don’t understand why the bar is always so high for BTS and their members. They are still young but have great potential.

          • He’s been around for over a decade lol other members convey so much more and bring anyone who hears them to tears. Stop pretending that this is all they can be capable of. Even in comparison to other members.. he’s playing it safe and it’s bc it’s what he does on most of their songs. He doesn’t sing with passion or feel like somebody who loves to sing… bc he doesn’t lol he doesn’t work on his vocals and his abilities have decreased severely over the years bc he’s more interested in fashion and modeling than he is singing… stop pretending you know anything about what BTS is capable of jjst bc you barely now know they exist… you clearly have no sense of the depth and artistry that they’re all 7 capable of. It’s not his role in the group… and it’s showing. He’s giving bare minimum… but go listen to jungkook, Jin and jimin sing… and don’t feel pain in jimins vocal cries, Jin’s powerful belting and emotional execution, and anything jungkook sings will bring a tear to your eyes.. listen to his cover of “falling” originally by harry styles, his cover of “if you” og big bang song, his cover of “purpose” by jb… “ending scene” cover originally by iu. I dare you to not feel something . V has it… he just doesn’t connect to it the way they do… he could.. but he’s more focused on visuals.

            • You’re seriously going to say that Jimin sings better? lol. Please google “Jimin sings offkey” and you’ll get tons of examples of actual cringe performances. This is as recent as music bank encore, they had to pull out the performance from Youtube.

            • My dear, I’ve been a BTS fan since 2013 and I have all their albums (as a group and solos), you don’t need to tell me to go listen to Jungkook or Jin.
Of course every member has a different way of expressing themselves, they are SEVEN different PEOPLE.
You are the ignorant here, and the one who needs to stop hating on Taehyung.

    • I think Baekhyun is boring as a singer and one of the worst of SM’s talented vocalists at interpreting or storytelling songs. He’s very repetitive and lacks dynamism and versatility.

  4. Very sleepy. I think the music video conveys the atmosphere pretty well (if you ignore the obvious cave setting LOL), this feels like you’re three hours into a nighttime karaoke session with friends, ready to call it a night, but your friend wants to get in one last comfy solo song, so you let them indulge.

    • Its sleepier than Winter bear and that song was a lullaby. At least it wasnt aggravating like Set me free pt2. Its still a very V song I guess.
I’ve found myself leaning and liking the songs released by BTS rapline. They seem to have more compelling and memorable tracks.

        • Lmfao said like a purely ignorant bias. You realize they almost always just write their own verses right? It’s easy to write lyrics for yourself… but for other ppl?!?! It’s not that simple. It’s why they’re always last in credits.. bc they only write what they say… unlike JK whose voice is the literal foundation of BTS music. What was it that rm called him? Oh yeh “the dna of BTS” yoongi … what was it “most genius vocalist he’s ever met or worked with?” Gtfo , you’re either in denial or ignorant . Congrats

You don’t know the story of BTS and it shows.
Maybe you can Google yourself what Jungkook says about Namjoon 😉

  5. I’m glad someone said it. V sounds great and looks smoking hot, but the song doesn’t deliver. The hook’s not hooking. It just comes across as repetitive. I’m curious how much input he had into the writing and production. I can’t find anything other than the producer credits – course because, Min Heejin.

  6. Is it just me that feels the beat and the melody don’t match? This song is a showcase of his voice and his voice only sadly – the emotions underlies in this song could not be feel conveyed and I can’t feel the “love” in his singing…there is this slight tension when he sings that makes me feel quite forced…

  7. I like it. I love his voice and feel he’s under used in bts and maybe here too.. but the potential is massive. This song is a bit short, a bit repetitive and a bit basic. But as a showcase, I can’t wait for the album 😍

  8. Does anybody else notice some vocal improvement? He does more vocal runs in this song than his other solo’s and I really like that. He has an amazing voice and I like but the song itself is very repetitive and basic. This song would work better if I could feel what he’s singing, but he sounds emotionless. The song isn’t bad, it’s relaxing and an easy listen but for me it’s a bit more dull than relaxing. I’ll still wait for the album though.

  9. Love Me Again is all about ambiance and the MV seems to be more about Taehyung’s looks, which are abundantly pleasing, but I was hoping for more from him. He’s yet to see a ballad he didn’t like so I expect many more slow songs on the album.

My issue with Taehyung is that he’s underdeveloped as a singer and that’s HIS fault. I adore the man. I really do. If I could only meet 1 member it would be a tossup between Tae and Hobi. But Taehyung doesn’t seem as into music as most of his band mates. This applies to Jin, too, but Jin has taken the time and put in the effort to improve his vocals and it shows. Tae is a mellow, laid back, takes it as it comes kinda guy in everything I’ve seen and I think he’s just chilled when he could have been taking vocal lessons and expanding his repertoire of skills. He’s not lazy…the man busts his ass at practice and performing but I think he’s coasting on his looks and the adoration of everyone who’s told him how beautiful his voice is for the last 10 years. I’ve heard him sound more soulful so know he can do it and guess I expected the best to be released first. Le sigh.

  10. Wow, listen to yourselves! Such critique! It’s not a BTS song, it’s V. That’s the point of a solo. If my local coffee shop played music this fine, I’d be there everyday. Even without the MV , it’s hypnotic. Please give the guy the credit he deserves and do t say rubbish like he needs to improve his vocals!

  12. I’m very underwhelmed. This doesn’t hold a candle to Stigma or Singularity. Those songs go places, this one keeps spinning it’s wheels on a not that strong hook. Without the music video I feel like this song can’t stand on it’s own, tbh.

    • I think the difference is that Stigma and Singularity had personal emotional experience and meaning for V. That will come out when singing. From what I understand, V did not write the songs on this album so the emotional investment is not there.

  13. At first, it had that Yesung’s “Small Things” vibe, but ended up becoming sounding one note and the chorus is repetitive to the point it became boring. Will probably need more listens to see if I like it or not. I like the smooth, jazzy sound and I think V can pull that off well, but not here.

  14. I love that all of the BTS solo era releases are so inherently ‘them’. I love that they are getting a chance to really flex who they are individually.
This song and MV are so very much V.

I find the MV mesmerising. It’s atmospheric and almost magical, and it demands my full attention.

Time will tell if the track itself can hold my attention. I’ll have to wait until it’s on Spotify.

  15. It’s clear from the way this review as written that the author is lacking in a musical background and an understanding of both jazz and R&B music.

The tonality and melody of Love Me Again (and indeed, all of the songs on Layover) are not made to be similar to BTS songs. They are CLEARLY in the genre of jazz – not full jazz, but a blend of modern jazz and R&B. That itself makes the songs on Layover completely incomparable to BTS songs, which are an entirely different genre with a different audience, chords, chord progression etc. What this author is doing is the equivalent of comparing a Justin Bieber song to Marvin Gaye song. It’s completely illogical and does nothing other than expose a severe lack of musical understanding.

All you have to do is look up reaction videos to V’s songs by legitimate songwriters, vocal coaches, producers, musicians, even DJs. People with actual musical knowledge and understanding. There is not a single one who is not completely enamoured by the songs on Layover (nuanced chord progression and layering for example) and V’s vocal abilities (changing from head to chest voice effortlessly for example).

Or you can look up V’s live performances such as on Tiny Desk or Band Sessions. Little to no reverb on his mic or backing, minimal instruments accompanying. Completely LIVE. He sounds exactly like his album.
