Song Review: HYO – Picture

HYO - PictureWhen it comes to her solo work, Girls’ Generation’s Hyoyeon has offered a sampler platter of dance genres. With new single Picture, she’s moved into dancehall sounds. This is a good match for her charismatic performance style, and she imbues an otherwise simple track with plenty of character.

Picture has a dark, mysterious magnetism. Its distorted loops and loping percussion craft a single-minded groove that’s incredibly atmospheric. I wouldn’t consider myself a huge fan of this genre, but I can appreciate how everything ties together. HYO’s vocal hooks are as repetitive as the groove, guiding us through Picture with a steadiness that adds to the song’s hypnotic quality. It may not find a spot on my playlist, but I can seem many listeners loving this.

  1. btw what are your thoughts on kyle gordon’s planet of the bass? its such a goofy but fun parody/tribute of eurodance (especially those grammatically incorrect lyrics (how did they sing those without laughing)). i dont know how well it’ll age, but for now its a bunch of fun craziness

  2. Nothing groundbreaking from its songwriting perspective, but Picture does what it needs to do and it’s crafted well.

Kinda bummed it’s only a one-song single and the promo seems rushed – the teasing time window’s seem so short IMO.

  3. I was nervous when I learned this was dancehall. However, hyo pulls it off even better than her previous singles imo. I still prefer those songs’ electronic palettes to picture though. As far as the actual song, Great groove, just wish the verses felt more intentional .
