Song Review: Mimiirose – Flirting

Mimiirose - FlirtingIt’s been a year since Mimiirose made their debut with the promising Rose. That’s a long hiatus for a rookie group, making follow-up single Flirting quite important. Listening to their first album, Mimiirose’s potential was obvious. Now’s the time to capitalize on that and remind fans why they’re a vital part of the K-pop landscape.

Flirting draws upon the strong vocals and mature sound of Mimiirose’s debut, but the song isn’t as engaging this time. Given the right material, I think this group could be incredible. You can hear that in pieces of Flirting, but the melodies don’t quite capitalize on their strengths. The chorus aims for “soaring” but veers off the rails with a higher tone that feels combative rather than cathartic. It’s almost as if the structure needed more build and restraint. As it stands, too much of Flirting comes across as melodic shouting.

On the plus side, I enjoy the pre-chorus. Prodded along by electronic guitar, this segment offers the taste of drama that the rest of the song lacks. The thumping percussion is also effective, and I would have loved to hear even more of it as Flirting moves toward its finale.

  1. This song is a perfect cross among KARD, Everglow, G-idle, and BlackPink. Complete with that farty bass sample.

Their group name sounds like a multi-level marketing scam.

And it’s an easy pass for me.

  2. (To those who think I’m serious, this is a massive joke meant to mock toxic stans of K-pop. Also, anyone who watches BFDI will get that reference)
(Also it’s inspired by the Permission to Dance BTS comment and Still DKB comment. Thanks Eijidoesthings and Sargun Gill)

  3. Liked the debut album a lot, mostly for the b-sides (Kill Me More is amazing), so I’m glad they were finally able to make a comeback. I think this new song is decent, the vocals are great, and the instrumentals aren’t bad either. I just feel like it’s a bit too slow? I’d have wished for a bit more build as well. The rating seems about right, gotta check out the b-side now.

    • Having listened to it a few more times now, it’s grown on me a lot. Can’t explain it, but I think I’d rate the track with a low to medium 8 now.

I also checked out the b-sides and really like them, too. Tipsy is really vibrant, and the chorus is unexpected but soooo satisfying.
It’s odd, it uses quite a few elements (the club beat, talk-singing and shouting parts, …) that I’m usually not a fan of, but it still works for me in the end.

mimiirose is an interesting group really, their style isn’t typically something I appreciate, but they still manage to make me like it. Fascinating. Really hope they stick around for a long time.

  4. Pretty dang good. It’s difficult to pinpoint just what makes them so appealing, but man do I like this group.

Is it even possible for a nugu group to have a firmly established sound after one comeback? Apparently it is!

Flirting feels like the natural continuation of Rose -> Kill Me More ->Lululu.

Hope they do well and survive the CEO’s financial fumbling.

Nick dipping into the 7s when he should be shooting for the high 8s. Shame, shaaaaame!

  6. This one is actually growing on me. My favourite song of their first album was Lululu and I feel like Flirting brings something similar even though there’s too much shouting to my taste. I do like that mimiirose kind of has their own sound that’s actually different from other groups debuting these days (I’m not saying I don’t also like them but I also like hearing a distinctive sound).
