Global Pop Round-Up: September 2023 Edition

Global Pop Round-Up

The Bias List is a K-pop blog that also covers a fair amount of J-pop. But just like most music fans, I enjoy tracks from all around the world. So, I thought I’d start a monthly round-up of some of the non-K-pop songs that have caught my ear. No ratings — just highlights!

Addison Rae – U Got It Bad

This is what I imagine a 2000’s-era Britney song would sound like in 2023. It’s soooo catchy.

Alessandra – Bad Bitch

She hasn’t missed yet. This is another addictive banger stuffed with personality.

Darin – Behöver inte nån

Darin’s new Swedish-language album is a great mix of upbeat synth pop, stately mid-tempo ballads and folk. No song is quite as awesome as Satellit, but Behöver inte nån comes close. The chorus is perfection.

Elba – You Do You

This has that cool, Robyn-esque Scandinavian sound all over it. Great melodies.

Icona Pop – Fall In Love

Their new album is basically a compilation of many past singles, but if you like upbeat dance music it’s super consistent. This is the newest track.

Käärijä – It’s Crazy It’s Party (ft. Tommy Cash)

His long-awaited follow-up to Cha Cha Cha! There are things I love about this (mainly the chorus), but I wish it was a solo track. The Tommy Cash parts are obnoxious in a not-fun way.

KeiiNO – Get Up

Definitely a pop sugar rush.

The Killers – Your Side Of Time

Probably my favorite Killers song in years. Those synths are MAJESTIC.

Kylie Minogue – Tension

A successful follow-up to Padam, maintaining the icy electronic sound with a more upbeat house energy.

Ollie Wride – The Way I See It

He’s just so good at making these 80’s synth-pop pastiches.

Poppy – Motorbike

This is so quirky and catchy and campy. Both the verses and chorus hit hard, even if they may seem at odds on first listen. I’m excited for the album!

Purple Disco Machine – Something On My Mind (ft. Duke Dumont & Nothing But Thieves)

Purple Disco Machine have a flawless 2023 singles run. This might just be their best yet. The melodies are so good and the vocal performance has so much character.

  2. also, the other day i decided to relisten to melanie martinez’s music out of pure nostalgia, as i used to be a fan of her back in 2017-2019 (when i was 11-13), and im shocked at how poorly they aged to me. there are still some highlights (mrs. potato head, cake, and mad hatter), but now i think most of her music is utter dogshit

god the pandemic and this blog have radically changed my music taste

  3. Im late as always – but I got excited seeing Käärija on here!

I completely agree that the feature is terrible. It’s sleezy in an awful way and not in a self-aware, funny way. The feature artist comes across the way Käärija’s music comes across at first glance: completely pissed with no substance.

I still like the track, much more than I was expecting actually. I was a little bit afraid he’d go full gimmick, but he raps in Finnish still and it fits in with his previous music, so I’m on board.
