Song Review: 82MAJOR – First Class

82MAJOR - First ClassThough we only had a pre-release to go by, I couldn’t find much in last week’s Sure Thing to convince me of 82MAJOR’s potential. It was a nice song, for sure. But these days, K-pop is overstuffed with “nice songs.” Now that they’ve made their official debut, it’s time to see what this group can really do.

With First Class, the guys have pulled a classic bait and switch. It’s quite different than Sure Thing, taking a far more bombastic approach. The guys trade blows over a vaguely trip hop beat as the song moves through several distinct phases. There are moments that stand out, like the melodic pre-chorus and the Y2K-era melodies sandwiched between chants during the chorus. However, these high points struggle to be heard within a dull framework of “na na na’s” and braggadious posturing.

With some cleaning up, First Class could stand as an interesting new sound for 82MAJOR. But with too many ideas competing against one another, it’s more of a mess — albeit one with potential.

  1. I like it, the na na na’s could have been left out but other than that I enjoyed it. There was no major change in tempo and it maintained good energy throughout.

I’m definately biased to this group since I really enjoyed their pre-debut songs and even watched a few of their pre-debut videos. Plus I really like their rappers and the new member seems to fit in pretty well. I wish they released a mini rather than 2 tracks.

  2. I would have left out the “jump” chant. The “nanana’s” and everything else sound like fun kpop to me.

It is a shame that they debuted this month because they might get lost in the mix of all the comebacks that are happening later on.
