Song Review: Young Posse – Macaroni Cheese

Young Posse - Macaroni CheeseEvery once and awhile, we get a song so ridiculous and so misguided that I wonder if we’ve gone past ‘traditional K-pop release’ and moved right into parody. If you told me Macaroni Cheese was part of some SNL skit lampooning the K-pop industry, the track would make much more sense. But no, this is the debut of DSP Media’s new girl group Young Posse.

This is the same agency that gave us Kara, SS501, Rainbow and Sechs Kies, mind you. Take moment to let that sink in. Following that lineage, we have Young Posse with what can best be described as a meme turned into a song. Macaroni Cheese has exactly one idea (“Macaroni cheese is… good?”) spiced up with plenty of cringey attempts to turn this into some sort of inscrutable sexual metaphor. “I just want it hot but don’t make my body,” “On the on the cream” and “Shorty like it greasy” are a few of my favorites.

This is all quite funny in a super uncomfortable way, but the song itself isn’t nearly as colorful. It’s almost completely monotone, pulsing over a dull, languid hip-hop beat that never modulates into something more interesting. The hooks are equally lifeless. If it wasn’t for the sheer insanity of the lyrics, there’d be nothing to grab onto. Its limp production makes IVE’s Baddie look like a maximalist banger in comparison. Macaroni Cheese gets an “A” for its comedy and commitment to a theme, but a rare “F” as an actual song.

  1. Wow, really wow, what kind of review is this?!?! As a longitme reader of your blog I’m deeply disappointed. I’ve been reading your reviews since 2069 and I’m just so frustrated that you can’t see that Youngest Posse only put out bops. Like this song is so good, and did you know they came from a small agency? Their career has been so hard and everyone is giving them online hate. I’m sorry Nick but this is honestly soty material. Even before I even listened to the song I even knew it was even soty material. You know what else is soty material, all of Stray Kids and SEVENTEEN songs, their songs still weeks way but I know my Kings will revolutionize the music industry. Your faves could never. Young Posse are revolutionary and did you hear about their deep lyrics. They talk about really sad moments in everyones life and it gets so deep. The part that made me cry was when they talked about when you feel like you’re going to sneeze but nothing happens. Ugh they are just so revolutionary YOUNG POSSE world domination! EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN EVEN STREAM GUYS WE HAVE TO GET TO 10K BEFORE
SUPERKIND EVEN IF YOU DONT LIKE THE SONG PLEASE STREAM IF U TRU FAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. I agree with the review, this song wasn’t it. Also, K-pop needs to stop debuting minors, this is getting frustrating! Only two members in this group are above the age of 18!

  3. And KARD and Mirae. I love Mirae and I respect whatever KARD are, people seem to like them.

I’m torn. It’s just so weird and quite possibly the most non-explicit explicit song since Cookie. But it works for tiny seconds at a time. Maybe a remix. I dunno. It’s funny once. Now I want mac and cheese. But my blood sugar is high today. To hell with you, Young Posse.

  4. I was slightly looking forward to this one, I thought it would be camp and that’s something I’ve been missing in kpop. This is…. something? It isn’t upbeat enough to be camp but it’s too silly to be serious. It’s just the worst mashup ever. Shout out to the girls for performing this with a straight face ig.

  5. “Sunhye wrote their debut title song “Macaroni Cheese” when she was at a composition class and saw a macaroni cheeseburger poster. She thought about it so much throughout the class she started writing about it.”

Idk this makes me like it a lot more. I actually still haven’t listened to it but I love that this was just a song a girl made up during class when she was hungry and now it’s their debut.

But actually maybe this is more of an indication that DSP is cheap as hell and won’t hire songwriters 😭

  6. As much as I like New Jeans and XG, I have to blame their popularity on whatever this mess was. This debut needs to be canceled and these girls need to go back to school and graduate.

I had no interest in their debut because their name is silly (and not in a good way) but I always like to form my own opinion….this is not one of those times. This is terrible, not fun, boring, and just eww. Apparently one of the members wrote this. Please put whatever money was wasted on this into Mirae…they deserve good music again.

  7. My level of English does not allow me to pronounce the name of this group with confidence. The song doesn’t do anything to me, but it reminds me of a meme song in the Hispanic world: Sopa de Macaco “Macaque Soup”, so at least I keep the laugh that the similarities give me.

  8. I might be alone in this opinion but I think this song is charming. I kind of miss the wackier side of kpop, songs with unserious lyrics about whatever, seems kind of diy and unpolished. It reminds me of Yum Yum Yum by Lip Service and also reminded me there’s not too many rap-focused kpop girl groups. After listening to their EP, the music seem to be to my taste.

  9. I could not disagree more. My issue with kpop is that 95% of the releases sounds the same. There are literally hundreds of groups, new ones debut everyday and they copy each other constantly. We are overflowing with songs that are generic as hell, big and popular groups included. This is not. The song and the production is unique (not in general, in the USA there are a lot of trap beats like this one, but in present kpop it is). The flow is catchy and harder to deliver than it seems, the attitude is nice. I have it on repeat since I heard it today.
Is it true that they are too young to debut and too young for this lyrics? Yes, but that doesn’t change the fact that the song is not at all bad. I think we should be grateful for putting up something new instead of the usual generic crap. Let’s make a game, shall we? Listen to any song released in the next week without reading the name of the artist, and let’s see if you can guess it for even one of them. You won’t.
