Song Review: Super Junior-L.S.S. – C’mon

Super Junior-L.S.S. - C'monNew sub-unit Super Junior-L.S.S. has somehow become the most prolific project from the group, releasing multiple Japanese tracks and now the one-two punch of Suit Up and C’mon. Though it had high points, Suit Up squandered much of its potential by  failing to find an engaging chorus to compliment its fun funk instrumental. Follow-up C’mon dives further into silliness and doesn’t work for me at all.

Longtime readers will know my aversion to songs that are too pleased with their own humor or cleverness. To me, C’mon feels like a bad SNL sketch. I guess it’s supposed to be funny, but its incessant shouting and awful drop chorus come across as annoying instead. It’s forced fun without the songwriting chops to back up its energy. The music video’s “extended pause” schtick is tired from the very beginning, but the track feels fragmented even in the audio recording.

I have a great fondness for Super Junior and their music, but their jokey tracks have never done much for me. It feels like this is a huge focus of L.S.S., positioning them as a trio of wacky uncles. They’ve nailed the brief, but it’s not a great look.

    • Start with Come On Over, then Up (there are three versions. I prefer the “red” pop version) then The Woman In Me. That’s her holy trinity of records and there’s hardly a bad song on any of them. I think I most prefer Up, but Come On Over has the best and biggest hits.

  2. It’s like the anti-“House Party” song. (which incidentally was my daughter’s favorite song of that year, somehow the playcount was surprinsingly high.)

The problem is, among other things, is that this is the nth song in a row just like this released by this subgroup since just last summer. Pick one guys. Filter. Also mystifying is why is this one released now mere weeks after their EP, which this one is not on. What are they promoting?

    Moving on …

  3. This is my least favorite of the tracks that they’ve released so far, and I probably won’t be playing it at all, but for a unit that sounds like it was originally started just for the fun of it and wasn’t meant to be serious at all, it certainly fits that bill, and I can appreciate what they’re going for.

Seriously, they keep coming out with new music… I think I saw that they’re releasing another new song soon? Sheesh, they’re expanding their party time discography fast.

This is how I feel about many ‘funny’ or ‘memey’ songs (I’m looking at you, Wife). I’ve struggled to understand where the line is for me between silly songs I love (BSS, CBX, Orange Caramel, Psy, etc.) and ones I immediately dislike. My conclusion so far has been that I like it when performers don’t take themselves too seriously, but take the music/performance very seriously. Or as I refer to it in my head: “taking fun seriously”.

If performers are clearly not putting in effort and think that making a ‘bad’ song is (part of) the joke, I am put off. Maybe I should call the songs I like ‘effortful fun’. I’ve been waiting to talk about this concept but it seems I haven’t put enough thought into it yet.

    • It’s a tricky line to skirt, for sure. I think it really depends on whether the output feels authentic or not. There are silly songs that feel authentically silly because that’s just the vibe of the performer, and then there are songs that feel like their silliness has been concocted in a boardroom with the point of making the performer and performance look overly clever.

  5. My second fav song by LSS so far, apart from “New Road”. And I say that even though I’m usually not into comedic songs at all. SuJu always win me over sooner or later even when I try to resist. They have been doing so ever since “Sorry, Sorry,” which at first I hated mostly because of the autotune, but once you’re addicted, there is no turning back. LoL
