Song Review: RM (BTS) – Come Back To Me

RM (BTS) - Come Back To MeFor awhile, there was some question whether BTS members would enlist in the military, given the breadth of their achievements and the valuable soft power they’d developed for South Korea. The enlistments ended up happening, but the music still flows during their hiatus as RM becomes the latest to release “new” material without being able to actively promote it.

Come Back To Me is a pre-release for his upcoming album and makes sense as an enlistment-era track. Unmoored from its music video, the song is a lengthy six-and-a-half minute slow burn. It’s sad to say, but you could fit three TikTok-ready pop songs into this time frame. Come Back To Me doesn’t sound like a “single” or “comeback” or “title track,” and there’s something admirable about that. After all, this group has earned the right to release whatever they want and they have a (literal) army of fans who will support every move they make.

This is a ponderous track, and one that will likely spawn much analysis among listeners. I can embrace that kind of analysis occasionally, but first a song has to grab hold of me in a visceral way. After a nearly two-minute build of halted phrasing and gentle guitar, Come Back To Me finally lays down its drums. This is the moment where it grabs me. The groove is loose and airy, begging for a more interesting set of melodies to tease out its full potential. This segment doesn’t last long and we’re soon returned to a hushed, spoken-word verse. It feels almost improvisational at times, like a laid-back jam session. I appreciate it more than I like it, but I’m curious what RM has in store for the accompanying album.

  1. I am not a great fan of this kind of music, but at this stage of their career and life as well as a pre release track, it fits. Also, I am someone who greatly appreciates RM’s musical abilities both as a part of BTS as well as apart from it. I am eagerly looking forward to the rest of the album.

  2. im happy for RM who wanted that me time for his creative space which he didnt have the time when BTS. I really like Indigo, it was a very thoughtful album that had many individual tracks that shined on their own and yet part of a story. Come back to me, tonally isnt the kind of music I would listen to. Not quite sure what to expect of this album

  3. This definitely feels like an album track over a showcase single to me, but I’m guessing it was chosen for the purpose of the MV. It’s probably not the kind of song I would listen to often on its own, but songs like this can serve wonderfully in the context of an album. Looking forward to seeing if that’s the case here. RM is an artist where I almost always play the full album whenever I turn to him rather than putting select songs on a playlist.

  4. I really liked this, RM definitely surprised me by going for this sound. I listen to a decent amount of k-indie so this is absolutely up my alley and something I’ll put on when I want to just have a light groove wash over me. He has my attention now for sure.

  5. In previews, I wasn’t sure I’d like this song. Turns out, I love it! I appreciate the slow burn. Just about lost it when the beat kicked in, and not sure I would have felt quite the same without the intro. I was a Bossa Nova baby of the 60’s and this has a Brazilian feel to me. Perfect for summer driving–or pondering life. Thanks, Namjoon, for always unique songs that challenge my aural pallette.

    • I’m a tad bit concerned that this song seems to be judged against dance or pop tracks.

To me, it seems like a precursor to something more akin to a moving snapshot of a segment of someone’s real life… especially with the MC’s parents, friends, and other people who are a part of his life experiences.

To judge it as a C+ bc it’s not a Bop seems unfair, since it’s quite possible that wasn’t the intent. I’m sure you’ll have your day, but I’m ALSO sure that “first reviews” can color opinions of those who aren’t familiar with the discography of this Artist, and may not have the artistic maturity (and patience!) to wait for tracks that may be geared to audiences who prefer something heavier on danceability and lighter on depth.

He’s NEVER going to be a “One-Trick Pony,” because his mind and heart have MANY chambers.

  6. I am very excited to see and hear what comes next 🙌 😄 in RM’s album since he delves deeper into life’s intricacies and it is refreshing to know there are 🎨 artists who can dive deeper into our thought processes instead of the everyday creations of so many musicians who bore us with revenge bebop titles….

  7. This is definitely the kind of song that I would add to my “Sunday morning coffee” playlist.

I’m so happy that RM decided to explore more his vocals, this is his time to try all he wants to try, he is always bold and honest with his music, so, even if this was an unexpected kind of song coming from a “K-pop idol”, It’s the kind of song an Artist would deliver to the world, as he is trying to draw new horizons for k-pop and himself as a musician, a human and an artist.
