K-Pop A-Z Review: GFriend – Cocktail Love

Cocktail Love (from Sugar Man 3 OST – 2020)

So, this is technically a remake track featured on the (very great) variety show Sugar Man, but my K-pop A-Z feature is nothing if not comprehensive. Despite this cover being released in 2020, it strongly echoes the group’s early work and would have fit on any of their first few albums. It was a good choice for GFriend, taking advantage of the sweetness of their voices with a light, enjoyable melody. Subtle (synth?) woodwinds give way to a fantastic guitar solo during the standout dance break, and the whole thing is tied together by a sturdy, new jack swing influenced beat. This sound is like pop catnip for me.

  1. Oooh I love this one. It’s also funny, being used to modern kpop, to hear such a straightfoward song: The two verses are exactly the same, and in fact each verse is actually the same part repeated twice (same melody, 4 times total). Really, aside from the (very traditional) key change, this song is a reliable with no tricks. Kind of refreshing, tbh.

I wish that Sowon had gotten a line in the chorus at the end, but other than that, few-to-no regrets about this.

This gives me hope that you’ll be covering their cover of “To My Boyfriend”, too!

Out of curiosity, are you also going to do solo OSTs and/or features?
