It’s exceedingly rare for a K-pop act to drop two full-length albums in the space of a year, but that seems to be EPEX’s plan. The date for their upcoming album hasn’t yet been set, but My Girl acts as its pre-release. The guys delivered an impressive one-two punch this spring, making me hope their sound had undergone a permanent transformation. Alas, My Girl is far more generic and safe than expected.
Given that this is a pre-release, expectations should be set accordingly. Coming into My Girl anticipating nothing more than a pleasant little bop elevates its effect, though even within the “pleasant little bop” sub-genre the track fails to land many punches. Its production is as faceless as can be, reusing similar percussion as so many other songs (including Seventeen’s single from today!). Wobbly synths provide atmosphere as the guys offer sweet vocals over the top. Somewhere along the line, the songwriters forgot to craft memorable melodies, resulting in a series of disconnected vocal runs that never forge into something exciting.

Quite cute and pleasant, but not something I’d seek often. Given their last pre-release was similar, fingers crossed their title track delivers a Youth2Youth 2.0.
Also, quite impressive they’re releasing studio albums back-to-back and in such a short timeframe. You don’t see that happen nowadays!
Rating’s the same.

I think every kpop boy band has a song like this on every / every other album. There is only so high this can get rated. I don’t know why one would release it as a prerelease, the appetizer, but whatev. Looking forward to the main course in due time!
