Song Review: EPEX – Breathe In Love

EPEX - Breathe In LoveIt took some time, but EPEX have finally found a sound that suits them. I’ve become more enamored with their newest title track Youth2Youth by the day, and follow-up Breathe In Love doubles down on its emotive, rock-infused style. Both songs have a satisfying arc, taking their time to deliver a full musical story and soundscape.

Breathe In Love has the benefit of time, since I’ve been living with the song for almost two weeks now. At first, I was disappointed that it didn’t keep its fast-paced, fully-charged energy throughout the entire running time. After all, too many slow-downs threaten to undercut momentum — and you know how important momentum is to me! But once I got over this quibble, I was able to enjoy the angsty melodrama for what it is. Though the energy varies throughout, all moments are strong enough to maintain interest.

More importantly, Breathe In Love‘s high points are very enjoyable. I love the second half of the chorus when the synths kick in and the tempo speeds. As depicted in the music video, it gives the vibe of running through busy city streets. Stabbing guitar is used well to punctuate the song’s hook, adding drive even when much of the instrumental drops out. Between this and Youth2Youth, EPEX have laid a super strong foundation to build upon throughout the year.

  1. I loved it! It has a similar approach as Youth2Youth with the anthemic chorus, except Breathe in Love manages to make it sound better with the more engaging instrumental. I hope they stick with and develop this sound further, cause they all nail this pretty well! 8.75 for me as well. And Youth2Youth too is growing on me as well.
