Last year, Kingdom added a “The,” capitalized their “D” and released one mini album before taking a lengthy hiatus. It all seems like much ado about nothing, and the title of special single Last Flower (화월가) makes me a bit concerned for their future. Still, it’s nice to see them revert back to the historical cosplay that first made them an interesting group.
Back in that era, I often commented how I loved their concept and vision but the music itself left me cold. We’re back in that realm with Last Flower. Its traditional instrumentation is a treat and the extended vocal lines add a palpable sense of drama, but strip away the arrangement and you’re left with a pretty unmemorable song. The chorus has satisfying heft that grows stronger as Last Flower blooms and finally crests in a percussice climax. However, it’s all a lot easier to appreciate that fully love as a pop song. It feels much more like a stage you’d see at a Korean cultural festival.

The song does serve multiple purposes. Their Chuseok special release in the hanbok every group does right about now. A nod back to their debut styling and sound. And some Korean traditional instruments for the Kpop Demon Hunter crowd new to this all.
I think it ticks all the boxes. I have always been a sucker for all the renditions of “Arirang”, and have more Song So Hee on my ipod than one might imagine.
Yes for me, maybe a mid 8, maybe a tick higher.

I’m not trying to dismiss the hard work and skills of the members of Kingdom, but it never fails to baffle me how any for-profit entertainment company is willing to continue propping up groups like these. Four years into their career, Kingdom remains a relatively unknown group with low sales numbers, a small fanbase, and no endorsement deals. Are some, if any, of these groups outposts of some kind of money laundering scheme?

The situation you describe is about half of kpop.

There are worse things than a stage at a Korean cultural festival. I found this beautiful and much more pleasant than a lot of their songs.
