Song Review: NMIXX – Spinnin’ On It

K-pop’s pre-releases are getting out of control. I can barely keep up! Fans are absolutely spoiled with material, and now we have these surprise-release ‘music videos disguised as album promo’ moments. The YouTube video attached to NMIXX’s Spinnin’ On It is technically labeled “Blue Valentine Core: SPINNIN’ ON IT,” but incorporates an entire song from their upcoming album. So according to the rules of this blog, it counts as its own thing.

JYP Entertainment has a history of dropping many music videos for their artists — usually after an album has already been released. In fact, some of NMIXX’s best material has not been promoted as a full-fledged title track. Spinnin’ On It isn’t as compelling as a song like Run For Roses, but it’s got a strong sound that blends their edgier influences with more approachable pop melodies.

Spinnin’ On It is hard to slot into just one genre, but at its core feels akin to the anthemic pop/rock approach that’s been in vogue this year. The production is more electronic and malleable, but the choral vocals that frame its structure give powerful rock energy. This is a good fit for NMIXX. The girls aren’t always given the chance to showcase their strong vocals and Spinnin’ On It lets that skill poke through occasionally. With that said, the melodies could be stronger — particularly during the chorus. The production and performance are left to do much of the heavy lifting and help compensate for the song’s more forgettable moments. It’ll be interesting to see if the full album follows this general soundscape or if it will take a more sonically diverse approach.

  1. Oh my god. There is just TOO MUCH going on in the beat i physically cant focus. It ends up sounding messy (especially in the pre-chorus) but i actually like the chorus. Maybe it’ll grow on me.

  2. There is indeed a lot going on. Multiple drum lines. Multiple bass lines. Multiple vocal lines. I am also hearing snips from other popular songs, chants like a Cheap Thrills, slinky descending lines like various aespa songs, a line from a Twice song, etc.

The high vocal line at 1:05 is just …. not good. It’s not good on the recording and they will never sing it live any better (if they ever sing that line live).

  3. I’d be curious to know exactly how many independent tracks are in this production… this is DENSE. I’d agree with HOYAD that on first listen it’s just so much. Their last release “[…]Forward” had some songs that were also intense on a first listen, too, so I’m fully expecting this to grow on me (like their last album). There is a lot I like in here, but I need some time for my head to digest everything going on! I do love that they continue to build so much of each of their songs around a wealth of vocal layers.

First impression 7, 8, 9, 10 = 8.5. I’ll probably give an updated rating when Nick reviews the TT for their new album.

      1. Know About Me was pretty easy listening despite having its standout charms so was pretty GP friendly, however…
      2. Why would we want that for Nmixx of all groups? Their charm partly lies in going against the grain, heck this was the most obvious through-line lyrically and musically of their last trilogy of albums!

While I think they would succeed easily with a more common sound, I think more than ever I appreciate a group being more adventurous and going for amazing rather than good. I think the underwhelming nature of Aespa’s last release is a perfect reason why I don’t want this.

If anything, this once again shows Nmixx swinging for the fences and that’s a good thing considering current trends.

  4. NMIXX is really one of the best kpop act right now, so consistent and immediately recognizable. This track sums up all their qualities, vocals, complex production, soul influences mixed with every genre. There is something very JPOP also that I love.

It echoes DASH in a softer and warmer way.

    Hope the album will deliver!
