Song Review: NMIXX – Run For Roses

NMIXX - Run For RosesJYP Entertainment releases so many music videos and performance videos and extended teasers that it’s become difficult to know which songs to write about on this blog! Run For Roses was first performed last year and isn’t the title track for NMIXX’s upcoming album, but it’s a compelling taste of what’s to come.

Run For Roses is the rare upbeat track that takes advantage of the group’s vocals — a treat for those of us who have been eager to hear more singing and less shouting from NMIXX. The song gives them a rootsy makeover, absorbing a few influences from country music. It’s surprising to hear these elements used this way, but the general vibe works quite well. I mean, when’s the last time you heard fiddle in a K-pop idol track?

Run For Roses takes a melismatic approach to its singing, placing a few satisfying runs at its core and climaxing in a dramatic power note that brings us into the finale with plenty of fanfare. NMIXX are up to the task, and this confidence is catchy. I’m not completely in love with all of the melodic choices, but they have a cinematic quality that catches attention. The track does a nice job segueing between theatrical peaks and more subdued sing-talk, adding a sense of dynamism that keeps Run For Roses engaging throughout.

  1. I remember not liking it much from watching the fancam of their performance last year but this is really good! now if JYP just dropped the MIXXPOP schtick we could have more of these.

  2. The JYPE girl groups are going all-out this year. I’m really happy to see the company get back on its feet.

The members say that their upcoming title track is their best one yet, so they’ve really got my expectations up.

  4. I enjoyed the song so much! Yes, I agree that NMIXX really shines when they do tracks that puts great focus into their vocals like those. “Sonar (Breaker)” was a nice grower for me but this song really shoots my expectations to great heights.

I’ve always wanted them to release the song ever since they performed it at their fanmeet a few months ago. And now we finally have the studio version (in the form of a performance video; it’s not released on streaming platforms yet but hopefully we’ll get it by next week with the album)!

I’m really looking forward to their new mini and their title track because based on what the members said, they’re looking really promising.

  5. I’ve loved both Itzy and Nmixxs releases so far, i’m hoping this is a sign that JYP finally got their shit together. Now all Nmixx has to do is have a good title track.

  6. Liking this a lot! Sonar wasn’t my style, but this one is so unique and has great vocals. Now I’m waiting for the album to drop so that I can listen to this outside of YouTube, too.
