F(X): A Career In Song Ratings

There are a number of acts who have debuted in the past few decades and have dozens of song ratings on this blog. I thought it would be fun to lay these ratings out in chronological order, line-graph style, and take a macro view of their careers so far. Then, similar to my “Underrated K-pop” features, I can average their ratings into one mega-score and place them in a pantheon alongside other acts.

As always, this feature has some rules of its own. I’m including any “Song Review” ratings as part of this graph, including Japanese releases and collaborations with one other artist. I’m not including Buried Treasures or solo/sub-unit releases. For the ratings themselves, I’m using the most current number on this blog, so if a song was part of a “Risers and Fallers” or “Legendary Songs Inauguration” post, that’s the rating you’ll see displayed here. That means there will still be a few ratings here and there I find slightly inaccurate, but it’ll mostly reflect my up-to-date feelings.

Finally, these scores are completely subjective. Feel free to agree, disagree and argue (that’s part of the fun!), but know that this chart reflects the opinion of only one person (me).

  1. I wonder if any of these ratings changed with time, given it’s been long since you last reviewed their title tracks. But god did they have a short but solid singles run, man, I miss them ):

  2. Insane to me that those are all the singles they had. I guess it makes sense given all of their albums/EP were decent or better so their discography still feels filled out.

Also looks like they’re the first in this feature to trend upward, but that seems easier to do when the data pool is smaller.

    • was just thinking this actually! i think nmixx and cravity will also trend upwards, but theyre the only obvious ones off the top of my head. honestly maybe kara/2ne1? i think their charts will look very similar to this one. idk but i’m excited to see how many other groups follow this trend!

        • oh yeah i didn’t even consider wjsn! probably cause my personal ratings for their early stuff would be higher than nick’s, esp for Happy and Catch Me. same with girl’s day, you can probably tell from my name but i liked their debut ep more than most people lol. i think you definitely could be right abt all these!

  3. my ultest ults!! and one of the few groups where i prefer their b sides to their titles. they were a huge part of my childhood and i remember how excited i got when all mine came out thinking a cb was on the way, i miss them so much

  4. I thought they’d be rated higher – but then I remember, you were often more keen on their b-sides than singles. I suspect if those were factored in, their average score might actually rise.

  5. Well my bias is pretty obvious here, but glad to see them doing so well even though f(x) was always more album-oriented than singles-oriented. I think the true “imperial phase” for f(x) was 2013’s Pink Tape, still the best full-length album in k-pop, but the singles run was solid too.
