K-Pop Risers & Fallers: May 2023

Risers & FallersRather than contain my “Risers and Fallers” feature to a single post in June, I’m going to share a bite-sized version at the end of each month. This will let me account for more songs and make a nice lead-in to the monthly round-up post.

I anticipate most of these ratings adjustments will be negligible: a 0.5 shift here, a 0.25 shift there. But, it’s a fun way to keep track of how my feelings on songs have changed over time – as well as which tracks currently have momentum on my playlist.

And remember, just because a song is marked as a “faller” doesn’t mean I hate it! Falling from a “9” to an “8.75” is no shame. 9+ rated songs occupy a totally different playlist in my music library, so I’m pretty particular about what qualifies. It’s a high bar.

This month’s feature covers the period from April 24th to May 22nd.

  1. Super and Spicy and Allergy all grew for me. YouTube shorts helped for Super in particular, while I just found myself going back to Spicy and Allergy on my own accord.

Funnily enough, Queencard also did end up growing for me. I think I realized that there wasn’t really any Kpop song out there that did what it did, and it is a bunch of fun to sing along too in all its cringiness.

I’m surprised to say but Enhypen’s album is also growing on me. I’ll never get over what Bite Me could have been but the power of its melody and the ‘oh my oh my God’ part is surprisingly potent. Bills and Sacrifice have really grown on me too.

Also I’m very happy that Crazy Like That rose for you as I was surprisingly taken by the song when I first listened to it so I was surprised it got a flat 8 when I read your review.

  2. ONEUS – Erase ME ( 7.25 → 8 )

I really hated that loud obnoxious sound in the chorus but unsurprisingly, it has grown on me. I can forgive them for that because the other parts of the song are so good. Also, I’ve realised that this song reminds me of Valkyrie.

    7.25 → 8

    ENHYPEN – Bite Me ( 6.75 → 7 )

This song has only slightly risen for me. I’ve been liking the B-sides more. Sacrifice (Eat Me Up), Chacome, and Karma are great.

Currently, I’ve been really liking iKON’s ‘Tantara’ and Dreamcatcher’s ‘BONVOYAGE’

  3. Queencard has been the biggest grower for me! It’s so fun to sing out loud and I really love their performances too!

  5. Spicy was a quick quick grower for me. In fact, I became a bit addicted to it and there were couple of mornings where I woke up stuck in my head (which happens often, the first BOYNEXTDOOR single “But I like you” is the song in my head of the week)

I think all of Karina’s little ad-libs, “uh-oh” “miiine” “line line line” are pretty incredible. Ning-ning and Winter are shredding the vocals as ever. The Giselle raps became more charming than annoying. I think it’s really really good!

The production razer sharp and modern, the energy is right, and the girls slay the performance. I think the live performances were what solidified my love of the song. I think it takes the Itzy template, Aespa-fies it, and then just sell it all the way!

  6. My biggest riser is Ikon’s “U”. At first I found it a little repetitive but it doesn’t bother me anymore, so that’s that. 8->8.5

Followed by VeriVery’s “Like Me Like That” which got better and better the more I listened to it. 8->8.25

Finally, Aimers’ “Bubble”…at first I found it too childish for my taste, but I never skip it when it comes on shuffle so I guess it secured its spot on my playlist. 7.5->7.75

Oneus’ “Erase Me”, ATBO’s “Next to Me”, and Enhypen’s “Bite Me” were instant likes and they have stayed up there since their release!

  7. Unforgettable by ONEUS is also a riser for me. Probably the most unexpected grower has been Bite Me by Enhypen, mostly because of the performance and the ridiculous controversy over the choreography.
