Song Review: Kiss Of Life – Countdown (Belle solo)

Belle - CountdownNew girl group Kiss Of Life are pulling a Loona-style rollout, revealing solo tracks from each member before the group’s title track emerges. However, they seem to be stuffing this rollout into a single week. I’ll try to write about each song, though the reviews will likely be on the shorter side.

Yesterday, Natty impressed with a 90’s r&b atmosphere. Belle’s Countdown is much more modern, echoing sounds that are in the charts right now. The song improves as it goes, starting slow until the beat drops for the chorus. Unsurprisingly, I prefer the heavier, percussive segments. The slapping beat during the hook is well-done, even if the melodies feel undercooked. There’s even more potential in the funky bridge, which could have expanded further into the track. By the end of Countdown, guitar distortion takes over and the song reveals a surprising bite. It’s not perfect, but paired with Natty’s solo, this makes me quite curious to hear how the full group will sound.

(Also, the music video is dramatic with a capital “D”…)

  1. I can’t stand watching the MV because of that bad acting that distracts me every time I replay it, but on the third try I can say that it’s a good song with some very interesting moments like when it gets funky.
Btw this new We;Na song almost escaped my radar but I stumbled upon it on instagram. It’s nice and enjoyable, I leave it here.

  2. Watching the Kiss of Life rollout, I’m like, wait, why did LOONA reveal their members (and sub-units) over two years when they could have just done it in two weeks?

I’ve liked both of this and Sugarcoat so far. Great singers.

  3. Belle composed and wrote lyrics for this song! She’s written a few K-pop songs and some originals on her Soundcloud. For a rookie, I quite like her musical vision. I feel like this is what Huh Yunjin’s I =/= Doll is supposed to be like.
