LIKE IT

There are a few vibes (or if I’m being more cynical, “templates”) I tend to love when it comes to SHINee. We can safely file Like It under the “View vibe.” It’s well-suited to summer, which makes me wish the guys would’ve promoted this as one of the album’s title tracks.

Apart from The Feeling, which has grown on me a lot over the past few weeks, Like It is my album standout. It’s only hurt by its relative lack of ambition. At under three minutes in length, the song knows exactly what it wants to deliver and wastes no time getting there. The hazy, finger-snap verses set the stage before the propulsive chorus rushes in. This sound is pure catnip to me, taking advantage of SHINee’s unbeatable vocal blend over an effortlessly catchy hook.

I have to give special props to Taemin during the first chorus. He absolutely attacks his lines, wringing more drama from the refrain than I thought possible. A jolt of electric guitar during the song’s final moments adds similar heft. Like It could do with more of these elements throughout the track, but it’s still an easy highlight.

**Also, I know some readers hate when I compare beloved K-pop groups to J-pop acts, but if you’re a SHINee fan (and especially a fan of this SHINee style), you owe it to yourself to track down Sexy Zone’s latest two albums. They’ve very SHINee-esque at times, and I can’t help but envision how SHINee would’ve destroyed summer 2023 with a title track like Desideria or Take A New Step.

  1. I need to stop forgetting that The Feeling is part of this album since it was pre-released, because I do love that one a bunch, too (sits on Identity tier). But Like It is easily my favorite track on the album. I hadn’t even made it out of the first verse and I already had it in my playlists. It’s been swimming through my brain since I woke up this morning (dragging EXO’s Butterfly Effect along with it occasionally), and I’m more than okay with that. It’s so straightforward, delivered perfectly, and just feels really stinking good to listen to. I wish they’d brought that guitar a little farther forward in the mix at the end, but I love that it’s there adding texture and extra oomph all the same. Love at first listen. I’ll be playing it all summer and beyond.

And seeing as I love both Shinee and this style, I think I’m going to be needing to check out some Sexy Zone albums…

  2. Oops i think you linked the ‘Identity’ track instead? Either way, Like It and Sweet Misery are my favourite on the album. Awesome synths and melodies.

  3. My favorite from the album. This, Satelitte and The Feeling are my favorites along with 10x because is so Jonghyun coded.

  4. OMG I was OBESSED w/this when I saw a clip of Taemin performing it and was like “Yap that’s going to be love at first listen” (just like the promos for Baekhyun-Love again, Onew-Sunshine, and Key- Helium to name a few) and was correct lol. The only down factor is that it’s under 3 mins (like whhhhyyyy…. 😭). This made it difficult for me to really immerse in it at first cause it felt rushed (esp. Minho’s final “verse”) that left me with an unsatisfied/unfinished feeling. Though, I do agree that it “deliver and wastes no time getting there” but dang it could’ve at least gave us an extra min on instrumentals (esp on for that guitar riff). All and all as the song states “I Like” and it is definitely on heavy repeat on my playlist 😊👍🏾

  5. This was my favorite from the moment I heard them perform it! And you’re right, Taemin kills it here. So easy to love.

  6. Its got that kind of instantly infectious groove that makes you want to jump out of your chair and dance, and I for one can’t dance at all. Easily a favorite off the album. Love the choreography too, its just pure fun.
