Song Review: Jay Chang – I’ll Be There

Jay Chang - I'll Be ThereJay Chang is making an event of his debut, releasing two title tracks in one day. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out my thoughts on his New Jack Swing-indebted Rockstar. The second track I’ll Be There dials things back but retains focus on his clear, confident vocals.

First off, I can’t get into this review without mentioning how I’ll Be There‘s opening guitar chords instantly remind me of Kang Seung Yoon’s Wild & Young (one of my favorite idol rock tracks ever). It gets bonus points for that alone, even if this song isn’t quite as successful. Those power chords are the production’s not-so-secret weapon, giving I’ll Be There a crunchy stomp. I appreciate when the arrangement leans into this musical drama. It gives the sentimental melodies more urgency.

Overall, I like this slightly less than Rockstar. It feels a bit more generic in a radio-friendly, sing-along way. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. At this point, I’m just happy to hear K-pop idols singing. However, a greater sense of grit and personality could elevate the song into a more memorable standout.

  1. I prefer Rockstar more but this is almost as good. I’m really more than satisfied with this debut as someone who rooted for Jay during BP and I’m wishing him a lot of success, he’s a one-of-a-kind talent in this generation of idols

  2. He needs to go like, 1.5 more out there with the rock vibe in his voice I think. I just need like that little extra touch of something once or twice, maybe add some raspiness? I don’t know. Like you say, that little bit of grit. but damn, what a strong debut

  3. Really liked this and Rockstar! Ever since I saw his highlight in Love Me Right I knew he was someone to look out for. Great voice and song choices. I also like the connection between both MVs which are simple but effective.

  4. As someone who initially disliked Jay in BP, I’m glad he didn’t make it into ZB1 because he’s clearly made for solo work and his vocals will shine much more in a group like ONE PACT. It’s too bad there isn’t enough of an Asian American indie or pop music scene to support him Stateside. He also would have been perfect on Broadway in Kpop the Musical if that show hadn’t closed early. Anyway, happily surprised so far with his solo work and looking forward to his group debut.
