Song Review: Soojin – AGASSY

Soojin - AgassiAfter a somewhat messy departure from (G)I-DLE and Cube Entertainment, Soojin has returned as a soloist. Re-debut AGASSY sees her following in the footsteps of many girl group members turned soloists. Right away, the song and performance remind me of something we’d hear from Sunmi or BLACKPINK’s Jennie.

AGASSY casts an evocative atmosphere, but I find the song itself to be pretty empty. Its instrumental is quite stylish, with plucked percussion and woodwinds giving it plenty of character. It’s the perfect backdrop for an equally beguiling melody, but AGASSY bunts when it could have climbed to ambitious heights. The pre-drop hook (chorus?) is nice and Soojin sounds great throughout. It’s a shame that we’re left with a plonky instrumental breakdown in place of a proper centerpiece. Judging by the chart success of similar tracks, there’s definitely an appetite for this style. Alas, it just isn’t for me.

  1. Honestly my bias factor is mostly due to Shuhua x Soojin (gonna unstan immediately if I don’t see no interactions!) Songwise, tiny bit better than Flower from Jisoo, but hook is not nearly as memorable. Can’t really say I even recall what this song sounded like after listening besides it being pleasant. Honestly the score is pretty lenient on Nick’s part considering this is former Gidle haha

  2. Reminds me of Jisoo’s solo.

Wish there was more to the song.

Glad to see Soojin’s return though.
Will support her in hopes of even better things to come.

      • Yeah, I’m familiar with the word through “The Handmaiden” and such. Idk about the context of the lyrics but “Missy” or something like it would be a cute song title. Or even just… a different romanization lol

  3. tbh I’ve been excited for soojin returning since i heard about it, this song is okay, pretty pleasant. there are a couple b sides that I like better, but nothing that’s particularly stand-out. i hope to see maybe smthn more dramatic (??) from her in the future, but this was still pleasant enough

  4. Agree with the review. Everyone should still check the other songs tho, her vocals really shines there! The bsides aren’t dissapointing.

  5. Tyty, one of the b-sides, is definitely a better song than Agassy! I’m obsessed with it. They should do a review on this b-side.
