TWS are not set to debut until later this month, but as the first Pledis Entertainment boy group following the incredible success of Seventeen, many eyes are already on them. As a taste of their self-described “boyhood pop,” they’ve dropped a fun music video for pre-release Oh Mymy: 7s.
The early Seventeen vibes are strong with this one. The verses have the kind of rollicking funk sound that hearkens back to classics like Shining Diamond, though the song doesn’t go as hard. I like the nimble rhythm and bright energy of these segments. It’s not reinventing the wheel, but it makes for a fun listen and ably showcases the guys’ skills as performers. I hope future releases will capitalize on this sound.
Frustratingly, Oh Mymy: 7s opts for a less robust centerpiece as its chorus. The song swerves into a chant-focused hook that feels tailor-made for platforms like TikTok. As far as this ubiquitous approach goes, it’s not an especially jarring transition and it’s not overly obnoxious, either. However, it still feels like a missed opportunity to go bigger and bolder. The second half of the chorus hints at this potential, but still doesn’t set its sights high enough. Then again, this is only a pre-release teaser. TWS has certainly captured my potential, but I’d love to see their title track veer further from this Seventeen sound to establish an identity of their own.

I can’t believe you’re only the second person I’ve seen compare it to Shining Diamond (first being me). I immediately thought of that song when the post-chorus came in.
as far as the chorus goes, it actually doesn’t bother me as much as I’ve seen with other people. it’s decent but, like you said, they could’ve gone bigger. the lack of bridge and conclusion is far more disappointing to me. fingers crossed that they have a legendary debut song like Adore U. they have very huge shoes to fill for being the new boy group to come after SEVENTEEN in eight years.

also I was worried they’d overlap with BOYNEXTDOOR based on the teasers and the number of members, I’m relieved

I have learned that TWS stands for Twenty-four seven With uS.
Because of course.
The song is a basic ground hit single, no runners advancing-type. Look like teenagers, sound like teenagers, targeting an audience of teenagers. It’s fine.

it’s a terrible name. their other big-name peers (BOYNEXTDOOR, ZEROBASEONE, RIIZE) got good group names but they got a stupid initialism

Actually, this is kinda good? I mean, quite flawed, but it is a nice preview I guess.

Nothing extra, just ordinary music placing heavy emphasis on the group’s vocal ability and chemistry.

in 2024 i’ve decided to not listen to any group whose name is an initialism for a whole ass sentence on principle. i’m tired of it. especially names that have colons within the initialism. i love a seventeen-sounding group but i think i’ll just stick with the og
