Song Review: AB6IX – Grab Me

AB6IX - Grab MeUp to this point, I’ve found AB6IX’s (surprisingly large) discography quite workmanlike. Their music is often good, but always on the generic side without much in the way of unique personality or perspective. It doesn’t help that they flit between genres very often, meaning you never know what you’ll get when a new comeback rolls in. Fortunately, Grab Me emerges as one of their strongest title tracks, tackling a bombastic, rock-fueled sound that gives the guys opportunity to let loose.

I’m heavily biased toward this big, sing-along sound, and from Grab Me‘s opening verse I knew it would be a personal standout. Mix vocal-heavy melodies with chugging guitar and sprinkles of synth and you’ve got a proven recipe for success. By sticking to this formula, Grab Me is able to fully harness these charms. And when the song decides to swerve, it crashes into an interesting post-chorus breakdown that fuels the energy rather than detract from it. It’s a smart move.

If Grab Me suffers from anything, it’s the same issues that have plagued much of the group’s discography. As pleasant and toe-tapping as the song is, it still feels a little generic and faceless. I’m not sure how AB6IX can overcome this, but to really “grab me” they need to find a way to imbue a great track like this with a personal stamp only they can deliver.
