One of the most enjoyable effects of K-pop’s current Y2K trend has been the return to hip-hop beats of that era. Angsty trap hi-hats seem to be on their way out in favor of bouncier, more playful grooves. This is the hip-hop sound I grew up on, so it’s bound to offer its fair share of nostalgia. B.I’s new single Tasty feels right at home in this musical playground, even name-checking Missy Elliott in its lyrics.

B.I’s post-iKON solo career has been pretty eclectic and interesting, most notably on last year’s To Die For album. Tasty is more lighthearted and slight than much of his material, but that vibe works as an asset here. At just over two minutes, the track keeps things simple and doesn’t wear out its welcome.

The production nails its early-2000’s rhythm, complete with spacey synthesizer to give it a slightly off-beat texture. This groove remains largely unchanged throughout the song, allowing B.I’s nimble performance to control the flow and momentum. He steers us through Tasty‘s catchy candy shop with plenty of charisma. The hooks are bright and easy, relying more on energy than melody. And while its modest ambition limits its rating, I can see Tasty providing a long-lasting sugar rush.
