K-Pop Risers & Fallers: June 2024

Risers & FallersRather than contain my “Risers and Fallers” feature to a single post in June, I’m going to share a bite-sized version at the end of each month. This will let me account for more songs and make a nice lead-in to the monthly round-up post.

I anticipate most of these ratings adjustments will be negligible: a 0.5 shift here, a 0.25 shift there. But, it’s a fun way to keep track of how my feelings on songs have changed over time – as well as which tracks currently have momentum on my playlist.

And remember, just because a song is marked as a “faller” doesn’t mean I hate it! Falling from a “9” to an “8.75” is no shame. 9+ rated songs occupy a totally different playlist in my music library, so I’m pretty particular about what qualifies. It’s a high bar.

This month’s feature covers the period from May 21st to June 17th.

  1. Ooh, yay for ABCD and Poongdung! And Hey! Hey! too! All of them are great as hell! 😀

Anyways, my personal risers and fallers are~

    Risers:

    ABCD- 8.75 to 9 (all 9 now)

    Poongdung- 8.25 to 8.5 (8, 8, 9, 9)

    Hey! Hey!- 9.25 to 9.5 (9, 9, 10, 10)

    Fallers:

    Armageddon- 8 to 7.75 (8, 8, 7, 8)

Harsh but that Onepact song deserved it. Sometimes, huge fallers like these only make me wonder how’d you rate the individual aspects now 😅

    • Out of these that I listened, WayV is a grower, Armageddon fell from somewhat an 8 to somewhat a 7, Suho is also a faller, and Hey hey grew on me a lot, since I stumbled upon the recording session, that really unpacked the song for me😅, oh and also Shooting star is a grower (I think it falls under June?), it’s beautiful.

  2. Suho’s “1 to 3” fell for you?!?!?! NOOOOO. I would say it rose for me because I just love the funk influences in rock music and he slays the hell out of it. It’s one of my favorite solos of the year. Guess different strokes for different people.

I’m glad that we agree on TWS’s “hey hey!” (their best single yet imo; sorry Plot Twist), Nayeon’s “ABCD” (I’m living for the early 00’s Beyonce vibes; if only the dance break was included in the audio though), and WayV’s “Give Me That” (their best song in a while; are we counting WayV and NCT Wish as k-pop now or..?) being growers.

aespa’s “Armageddon” was also a grower for me (like any aespa title track for me lmao) because I wouldn’t mind the droning chorus now; it doesn’t grate on me as much as it did on my first listen. The performance kinda helped too. I still think “Supernova” is the superior title track though.

  3. Daddy’s Girl (but it must be the explicit version)😂😂. Can’t argue with that!

    My risers are:

    TripleS – Girls Never Die

    Treasure – King Kong

    Ateez – Work🤷🏻‍♀️

    Nowadays – Oowee🤷🏻‍♀️

    Ily:1 – I My Me Mine

      • And don’t forget, Hey! Hey! is for sure gonna top his favorite K-Pop songs of 2024 (unless Golcha has a comeback or Sweetune produces a title track). Maybe this or Impossible, but the Top 2 is certain 👀

        • I could see TWS and RIIZE having at least two tracks in his top ten list tbh

I have a feeling æspa’s Supernova will be super high on the list too

          • With combination of all the 9+ rated songs from January + this month + Riize, The Wind and TWS dropping high rated songs, the competition for Top 10 is really strong. Unless Supernova managed to rise further for Nick over time, I see it either in the Top 15-20 or the bottom of Top 10.

      • oh 100% I don’t think there’s no competition lol. unless some other group debuts with a showstopper this year (SMNGG maybe?)

  4. also what do you think of ateez’s shaboom? me and anna (annietime21) both absolutely hated it (shitty autotune and even shittier chorus) and think its one of ateez’s worst b-sides 💀

    • Ngl, I wish KQ gave it a MV or performance video cause I would love to see Nick review it and also cause I wanna know if it joins or surpasses Joke as the WSOTY since he seems to have warmed up to My Idol based on his No Doubt review (unless xikers drops a Koong 3.0 and it’s much worse than the original) 😭 Or maybe he can start a “Treasure that should remain buried” series as the evil twin of “buried treasure” and he highlights this song as the former (though it seems unlikely)

      • “Treasure that should remain buried”

Ha, I would love for Nick to do this, but I know he has lots on his plate already.

        • Yeah, and sometimes I like reading reviews where Nick shows his sassy side (such as his Universe reviews, Still Nirvana, Sheesh and ATBO’s debut), so it’d be fun to see his sassy side more often, but ofc, I don’t wish to burden him too much!

  5. I know you mentioned that you have 9+ songs on a specific playlist, but I’m curious if you have 10s on a designated playlist apart from the 9+ songs?

    Like

    • No, but that’s mainly because I use star ratings in iTunes to automate playlists. A five-star rating equals 9+ for me, but there’s nothing above five stars in iTunes.

It would be fun to make a playlist of all 10’s, but the thought intimidates me. I get very nervous awarding 10’s for some reason. It feels like such a rarity that I really have to give a lot of consideration to!

  6. Super happy to see Poongdung as a riser here! It appears to be my most listened track this month, I really like it a lot. My rating stayed relatively stable, I’d give it a 8.75 I think.

The b-side “I like I like” definitely grew on me though. I loved it in the highlight medley, but when it came out I was a bit disappointed at first. However, after a few listens, I li-li-like it a lot more!
