Song Review: BBGirls – Lemonade

BBGirls - LemonadeIt’s getting harder to distinguish between a proper comeback mv and a “special mv” in K-pop, but BBGirls’ Lemonade deserves at least a brief write-up. Despite its repetitive structure, comeback One More Time ended up growing on me. It makes for a great singalong while driving! Lemonade is funkier and groovier, taking a more laid-back approach to summer sounds.

This is the kind of track that grows more addictive the longer you hear it. Its instrumental is packed with goodies, from insistent rhythm guitar to a surprising squeal of sax during the chorus. I’m partial to the bubbly electronics that echo each line of the chorus. It’s a catchy touch that further enhances Lemonade‘s innate appeal. BBGirls excel at this style and I hope they plan to keep pursuing it in the future.

  1. Yeah, nice groovy song. The song knows how to lay down a groove and just let it run. No embellishments or changeups or unnecessary rap verses required. Set the pace, the beat, and go!

I can hear this song as an easy insert into DJ’s set lists, one verse and chorus before moving onto the next, and then sampling the “something something Lemonade!” vocal line over the top of that follow on song. Most might say Dua Lipa especially with that disco-lite beat clap clap clap (pause) clap-clap, but for me it hear it on top of “Genius of Love” Tom Tom Club and every song that samples that song.

  2. At my work as an ad copywriter, I like to listen to those Youtube videos that loop the same song for 60 minutes. Because of that, I’ve ended up listening to Lemonade a lot more than One More Time. It just washes over you in the best way. Great production, they definitely earned their 9 score for that.

  3. Off topic but I was looking randomly at different artists on apple music, and I learned that Jung Yonghwa had a comeback today. Thought the album was solid. Small Talk and Season of Love are highlights for me.

  4. I definitely prefer this to Xodiac’s Lemonade! I wonder why it didn’t come out earlier in the summer? This and Lip Gloss would be the songs of the summer for me.
