Song Review: Lim Hyunsik (BTOB) – La Mar

Lim Hyunsik - La MarAll the way back in 2019, BTOB’s Lim Hyunsik released a cool sci-fi concept album. Its unique artistic ambitions felt like a rarity in the world of idol soloists, and fans have waited a long time for a follow-up. I approached new single La Mar with built-up expectation, hoping for a follow-up with its own unique vision. Unfortunately, the song mostly treads water as a dull version of a rock ballad.

Hyunsik’s talent is on full display, from his hearty vocal to his fiery guitar playing. Rock is a great genre for him, and I’m pleased he hasn’t dramatically shifted style. I just wish it was in service to a more interesting song. La Mar plays exactly how you’d expect an emotive ballad like this to unfold. Its melodies feel instantly familiar and never blossom into anything beyond that. It’s a sturdy example of the form, enjoyable in the moment but lacking the distinct afterglow that keeps you coming back for more.

  1. It is indeed quite simple. But his voice and delivery did enough to elevate it to a somewhat higher score for me. Very suitable to my moody rainy nights playlist. Though I do hope for some more bombastic material on the upcoming mini album like “Black” from Rendez-vous, which is one of my all time favorite songs, Korean or otherwise.

  2. I just realised, as someone who knows only a few members of BTOB by name, that this whole time I though this man’s voice in the songs was Sungjae. Which isn’t even that weird becuase they sound so similar except Sungjae has a bit sharper tone, and Hyunsik sings better..

  3. a lot of these melodies remind me of “dear love” but the parts connecting these melodies leave no mark. It’s also a minute too long imo. Probably a case where Knowing the lyrics helps the enjoyment. Man sounds great though

  4. I love it! The guitar sounds so good. But mind you I’m a massive radiohead/Thom York fan so I will happily listen to five minutes of slow burn emotions lol
