Song Review: Song (iKON) – It’s Call

Song (iKON) - It's CallThe members of iKON continue to stretch their wings, releasing more and more solo releases in varying genres. It’s already been a busy year in this regard, and now lead vocalist Song Yunhyeong is throwing his hat in the ring with the energetic It’s Call (콜이야). Its boisterous trot sound may be surprising at first, but when you dig deeper into iKON’s albums there’s actually precedent for this.

Trot is one of those genres I’m so happy exists, even if I’d rarely choose to listen to it myself. Given K-pop’s continued Westward expansion, it’s refreshing to hear something that feels tailor-made for Korean listeners. It’s Call is a big, brash bundle of silliness, performed with verve and and a knowing sense of humor. It’s too amiable to dislike, and its punchy chorus will wear you down over time. I imagine it would be a blast at karaoke.

Yet, a little of It’s Call goes a long way. As with most trot songs in this style, you really have to be in the right mood to fully enjoy it.

  1. I share your thoughts; even if it’s not my go-to genre, it’s great to see a mainstream K-pop artist pull a trot banger, and a pretty good one, too! Got me on the right energy after my first coffee of the morning worn out.
