K-Pop Risers & Fallers: July 2024

Risers & FallersRather than contain my “Risers and Fallers” feature to a single post in June, I’m going to share a bite-sized version at the end of each month. This will let me account for more songs and make a nice lead-in to the monthly round-up post.

I anticipate most of these ratings adjustments will be negligible: a 0.5 shift here, a 0.25 shift there. But, it’s a fun way to keep track of how my feelings on songs have changed over time – as well as which tracks currently have momentum on my playlist.

And remember, just because a song is marked as a “faller” doesn’t mean I hate it! Falling from a “9” to an “8.75” is no shame. 9+ rated songs occupy a totally different playlist in my music library, so I’m pretty particular about what qualifies. It’s a high bar.

This month’s feature covers the period from June 18th to July 22nd.

BABYMONSTER – Forever

  1. Aw, sucks that Shock fell for you, it’s still my favorite comeback of the month (*´-`) But yay for Cheeky Icy Thang! ٩( ᐛ )و

    Anyways, my risers are:

    Shock- 8.75 (8, 10, 8, 9) to 9 (8, 10, 9, 9)

    Cheeky Icy Thang- 7.75 (7, 9, 8, 7) to 8.5 (8, 9, 9, 8)

    Forever- 8 (all 8) to 8.75 (9, 8, 9, 9)

    Fallers hm… idk :p

Also, TWS rising so high? Man, I feel like this, Plot Twist and Hey Hey are sure getting into the Legendary Songs Inauguration next year (speaking of which, when is this year’s edition coming? 👀)

  2. I have definitely grown to like Cheeky Icy Thang, though I wouldn’t say I actively seek the song out.
Ahh, I wish I could love TWS songs as much as other people, but they really don’t click with me, which is kinda unfortunate, because I want to enjoy them more than the lukewarm response I seem to get from their songs (I certainly have a heavy bias for funk and electronic music)

  3. I’m not surprised at all by how much If I’m Your S, Can You Be My N rose for you. I might be in the minority but among all their title tracks/singles, I really think it is the strongest. It captivated me right from the first melody. Its melody is just insanely nostalgic (of early Gfriend in particular) and no other song gives this exact feeling.

I’m glad Forever rose for you. It is just everything I was looking for from BABYMONSTER. It has made me excited for their next comeback.

I heavily disliked Cheeky Icy Thang at release, and seeing it rise made me come back to it. I like it a lot better now, but the delivery stills feels awkward to me. I have high tolerance to weird English lyrics but the lyrics here cross my line of tolerance T.T. Nevertheless, I initially rated it 6.5 which is too low, but perhaps it’s a high 7s as of now.

    • I second all of the risers, for Forever, it might be the only Baemon song I like, and it pushed the group a little into the relevant side for me. Cheeky icy thing made not so much sense for me at release, but them promoting it on music shows made it grow on me. So what actually made me watch music shows at all was TWS promotion of course😂, and I wanna thank them cause I gotta say in their weeks of promoting SN, I was glad I was seeing so many other acts too. Now that a month since the release of SN has passed, I might even say that it’s a tad better than Plot twist for me. The melody of SN that was hinted at the beginning of their Adore U cover has since stuck with me, and the production that makes the whole thing sound and feel like flowing water only makes it better😅

  4. I don’t understand how Rocky’s “Jealousy” is the biggest faller since it only fell by 0.25 like all the other fallers this month.

    • From now I interpret it, it’s prolly how he perceives how quick the songs aged or songs he considers to have fared the worst in the long run or found it to be the least addictive. On the contrary for an example, back in Sept last year, he stated Get a Guitar as the biggest riser, even if like the other songs in the list, it only rose by a 0.25, so maybe he found it to be the most addictive/it aged the best/perceived it to fare the best in the long run. So I assume it’s the opposite here for Jealousy (but not enough to lower it further). Sorry, I like to overanalyze/overthink everything :p

      • If there’s a bunch of songs with the same ratings reduction or increase, I just choose the one that feels like it’s changed the most for me. It doesn’t necessarily mean it’s my least favorite or favorite of the bunch, though.

    • I’ll have to give that some thought! I’m sure there are cases of that happening, especially over long periods of time. Sometimes a song that feels a little irritating due to its ubiquity at a certain time can end up feeling like a classic after years have passed.
