K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Bird

Bird (from Bird – 2019)

Following up on their excellent 2018 Japanese album, special single Bird was the first EXO track to feature only six members. It’s an oddly generic effort for the group, but succeeds thanks to a strong chorus and upbeat energy. Its instrumental positions itself within tropical trends, augmenting these overplayed elements with rousing percussion and vocal effects aplenty. The verses feel a bit aimless, but there’s a warmth to Bird’s hook that suits it well. I love the filtered refrain that follows each chorus, though it could have been arranged with even more drama. This is solid, mid-tier EXO — not title track worthy, but pleasant nonetheless.
