K-Pop A-Z Review: f(x) – Ice Cream

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Keep up with f(x)’s A-Z reviews here!

Ice Cream (from Nu Abo – 2010)

Ice Cream utilizes plenty of 8-bit synth textures as part of its retro arrangement, and that’s probably the biggest contributor to its appeal. The melody itself is a little sing-song for my taste, but there are a few spikes of power to be found in the pre-chorus. Lots of f(x)’s earliest work has a repetitive structure, whether that’s in the form of a simple synth loop or one-phrase chorus. Ice Cream succumbs to both approaches. Thankfully, each is enjoyable on its own, even if the group would go on to craft far more engaging tracks in the future. Pair this with Red Velvet’s superior Ice Cream Cake, and you’ve got a dessert feast of SM girl group tracks.

  1. I have a great fondness for f(x)’s early output, cutesy affectations and all. Back when I discovered their music I listened through everything in order of release, so I didn’t have their later, more fleshed-out sound to compare with. It’s a different kind of quirky, but I like it!
