Song Review: UP10TION – Crazy About You

UP10TION - Crazy About YouUP10TION’s music has a way of sneaking up on me. I’ve never considered them a favorite group, yet their songs have placed inside my year-end top ten on two separate occasions. Last year’s dynamic Spin Off nearly made that three. However, I find their output to be very inconsistent. Like so many K-pop groups, they’re at the mercy of their collaborators.

New single Crazy About You (너에게 미쳤었다) spawns from a trio of composers, but lacks identity. The guys have opted for a moody mid-tempo — the sort we tend to hear around this time of year. I’m a little surprised they didn’t choose to promote a more upbeat title track, but this style of song can be equally satisfying if powered by a compelling melody and knockout production. Unfortunately, Crazy About You falls short in both areas.

Melody is such a driving force behind sentimental tracks like this. Crazy About You is definitely melodic, but doesn’t offer a single line that really hits. Instead, it’s formed from mushy, forgettable fragments. UP10TION deliver the emotion well. They just aren’t working with very strong material. Similarly, the EDM-inspired instrumental traces familiar ground. Portions almost hearken back to the popular Chainsmokers production trends of 2017. Yet just like the melody, no single piece of production sticks out. It all feels murky and muddled, like a picture that hasn’t quite come into focus. I’d rather hear them tackle something starker that uses empty space to its advantage. I’m just not crazy about this song’s lack of dynamics.

  1. props to you for writing 5 (!!) whole reviews in a day, and so quickly too! i have nothing to say about the song itself but this is the weakest released today by far, in a day where I didn’t like many, if any of those songs.

(excluding the generic piece of sound by the ex-the boyz’ member hwall – that’s just bad in a banal way that doesn’t deserve to be talked about)

  2. I remember when I first heard Spin Off I didn’t think too much of it and just thought it was a nice song. And then after a couple of re-listens I ended up absolutely loving it! It think this too is exactly like that! I kinda have confidence in Up10tion as a group I think! Their stages usually showcase the song even better and I really enjoyed this song – moody love vibe and all 😂

P.S. I am kinda stalking the comment section I know, but I’ll wait for Bobbin too and then I’ll vamoose XD

  3. This reminds me a lot of Not the End by Highlight, except that one had that nice bit of guitar. Maybe because the MV also featured looking at paintings in a gallery.
