Song Review: One Love One Heart – Fireworks

One Love One Heart - FireworksThere’s a small cavalcade of (mostly underrated) J-pop groups I follow extensively. You’ll find me marching alongside Fantastics, Genic, Ryugujo, XY and One Love One Heart. All have consistently released some of my favorite music of the last year. After unveiling their debut album at the start of 2023, One Love One Heart have dropped a handful of digital singles. Fireworks is their latest, and their first after the departure of sub-leader Sakutaro.

This song has actually been around for weeks, but a surprise music video premiered last night so I must do my duty and give it a full review. In short, Fireworks is a sprightly summer bop — super upbeat and fun with a chorus that will lodge itself right in the pleasure center of your brain. The line distribution between male and female members is slightly more balanced than their previous two singles, though I’m still missing the harmonization that made songs like Glory Dayz so epic.

Fireworks benefits from the unique tones of the members’ vocals. On its own, it’s a typical, bouncy j-pop track. However, the constant switch-up of voices gives it a ton of character. Kouei (who kicks off the song’s first verse and first chorus) is a particular standout. Bolster this with a trendy house beat and sparkling synths and you’ve got an irresistible dance track tempered by just the right amount of summertime wistfulness.
